Sabrina Greco was happy to finally clear out the back of her car, and not just because the large pile of coats was making it harder to carpool.

Greco, director of operations for the Town of Clarkstown, was pleased to move the coats from her car and give them to People-To-People as part of 22nd annual Coats For Kids program, started by Clarkstown Supervisor Alex Gromack.

“It’s a good way to help families in need, especially as it gets colder,” she said. “The people of Rockland really show their generosity each year we do this.”

This year, 497 coats were collected and cleaned at four locations: Fine Line Cleaners in New City, June French Cleaners in Congers, Personal Touch Cleaners in Spring Valley and Tiffany Cleaners in Chestnut Ridge.

The coats were then donated to People-to-People in Nanuet, Community Action Program in Spring Valley, Martin Luther King Center in Spring Valley and Community Action Program in Haverstraw, where they are distributed to families with young kids in need of some heavier winter clothes.

On Tuesday, Greco was bringing another round of coats to People-to-People in Nanuet. Diane Serratore, executive director of People-to-People, said the program is a big help every year during the winter months as they get usually 200 to 300 coats and all of them are given out every year. She added that People-to-People can use warm hats, mittens and nonperishable food.

“The one thing that means the most to me is the tremendous support People-to-People gets from the Town of Clarkstown, from Supervisor Gromack, from all the folks in Rockland County,” Serratore said. “We can’t do what we do without the support of our neighbors, and we’re really grateful.”

People-to-People is located at 121 West Nyack Road, Nanuet, and can be reached at 845-623-4900.
