Downtown Nyack Becomes Stage For TV Show
Crews on Main Street, Midland Avenue for production of new show, SMASH.
Crews working on new NBC television show have taken over part of downtown Nyack today for filming.
Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston are slated to be in Nyack along with a band of cameramen, makeup professionals and directors.
Smash, a new NBC television show that chronicles the making of a Broadway production, is filming in the village today, using the BOCES building and Wasabi restuarant as settings.
"We want to film in a small town, and the river view is perfect," said Frank Covino, a NBC representative and location manager who cleared the project with village officials.
The show stars Messing, Houston and Uma Thurman, among others, and was set to begin rolling at 8 a.m. Filming may not finish until midnight, Covino said.
The music-based show will utilize the inside of the BOCES structure, which was once Nyack High School, for several shots. There will also be a scene of Messing in a downtown eatery. The shot will show her through the window of Wasabi on Main Street.
Covino said NBC is giving a donation to Nyack High School, as well. "They're willing to work with us," he said.
Trustees looked over the details and OK'd the project. In January of this year, the village passed a new law that wiped away previous, strict filming regulations that kept most camera crews at bay.
"We've been off the radar for a while," said Richard Kavesh, Nyack's mayor. The filming will net Nyack an initial $500, plus $250 per hour. Nearby businesses who lose parking spaces and possible business will be reimbursed, too.
The show is set to air on Feb. 6 at 10 p.m.
Trucks hauling equipment for the show are parked on Main Street and on Park Street in downtown Nyack, with a set cafeteria tucked away in an alley on New Street, just off Park. The filming has also put some additional parking restrictions on High Avenue between Park Street and Main Street.
Although the filming is taking up spots on Main Street, Nyack has free holiday parking in the village lots just off Main Street.
