Eat Local: Spicy Foods

Craving something different tonight? Check out our new column for some delicious choices

The weekend is quickly approaching and you're thinking about eating out. Check out some places you haven't been to before:

El Bandito (Spring Valley)

  • Location/hours: 27 South Central Avenue; Daily, 11:30 a.m. to midnight
  • Pricing: $16 to $25 for a meal
  • Atmosphere: Casual, authentic Mexican style
  • Why go: There’s a mariachi trio band that plays everything from traditional Mexican music to Pink Floyd! Plus you get free chips and salsa when you get there, plus a free cheesy tortilla appetizer, and a free crispy cinnamon dessert.
  • My pick: I’m a sucker for a good chicken Chimichanga, and here is no different. Pair it up with a fresh made sangria and you’re good to go.

Spice of India (Nyack)

  • Location/hours: 125 Main St.; Lunch/buffet: Sat & Sun 12 noon to 3:30 p.m.; Mon through Fri 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Dinner: Sun through Thr 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Fri & Sat 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • Pricing: Entrees range from about $13 to $27
  • Atmosphere: Nice but casual, recently renovated, modern with some tradition Indian accents.
  • Why go: Tasty food, lots of drink choices! The lunch buffets are a good choice if you are super hungry (only $10.95 on weekdays and $13.95 on weekends).
  • My pick: Start with the garlic Naan or the vegetable samosa (or both), then go for the Tandoori Mixed Grill and don’t forget to use the yogurt sauce, it's scrumptious.
