Felix Festa Student to Sing at U.S. Open
Samantha Quinn will sing at the tournament for the second time.
Samantha Quinn loves singing.
"I kind of want to be on Broadway," the West Nyack resident said.
Well, Broadway will have to wait for a little while, because Quinn, 12, will be singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" Saturday before the men's semifinals in the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the U.S Open 2010 in Queens.
"I'm a little nervous," the Felix Festa Middle School eighth-grade student said, "but I'm really excited.
"I don't want to mess up," Quinn said, "but my mom said to focus on what you are going to do, so I'm going to be fine."
This is the second year in a row she has been chosen to sing at the tennis tournament. She sang "America the Beautiful" in 2009.
Quinn is one of 15 singers, ages 12 and under, who will perform patriotic-themed songs during the 2010 U.S. Open.
Helen Quinn, Samantha's mother, said her daughter was chosen at an audition at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
"She sang the national anthem at a Little League once and someone mentioned the open casting for the Open," Helen Quinn said.
"It makes me, obviously, proud," she said. "She's honored to be picked to sing on Sept. 11."
Helen Quinn said her husband, Michael Quinn, an electrician, worked at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks providing electricity for rescue workers and the Red Cross. She said he is now ill because of the conditions in which he had to work.
Samantha Quinn said the experience of standing and singing in front of a stadium full of people is quite amazing.
"It's really nerve-racking," she said. "You walk out on the court and they give you a mic. You only hear yourself, no echo."
Acknowledging that the national anthem is not the easiest song to sing, Samantha Quinn said one thing goes through her mind when attempting it.
"Please can I hit this note?" she said.
