Lake Nanuet Closed for Remainder of Season After Storm Flooding

Last night's storm flooded Lake Nanuet and it closed today and will not reopen for the rest of the season. Debris and run off from the storm turned the pool water brown.

Last night's storm left mud in its tracks as it stomped through parts of Rockland County, including Lake Nanuet. Clarkstown Recreation and Parks closed pool due to the storm's flooding and debris.

"It flooded after the storm last night," said Amy Condit, Assistant Aquatic Director. The pool water is now a dark brown and she added that the murkiness of the pool is from run off from the storm.

Although Lake Nanuet's regular opening season ends Labor day September 6, Elaine Apfelbaum, senior recreation supervisor, said the pool will stay closed.

"A decision has been made at this point, due to the nature of the sitution, Lake Nanuet will not reopen for the remainder of the season," Apfelbaum said. "All residents should utilize Germonds pool and Congers pool, which will be open through Labor day."

In order to reopen the pool, it would need to be drained to clean the soot and debris from the storm. Draining the pool would take several days and with less than 10 days left in the pool season, the Town decided to keep the facility closed, according to a press release from Town Supervisor Alex Gromack.

"We are taking the appropriate health and safety precautions for the residents of Clarkstown and for the surrounding area," said Gromack.  "Mother nature left us with quite a mess to clean up at the Lake Nanuet facility and just would not be possible, nor fiscally responsible, to do so before the end of the summer season."
