Library Board Votes On Next Year's Officers At 2011 Final Meeting
The New City Library Board of Trustees also released the official totals from Wednesday's votes
The New City Library Board of Trustees held its final meeting of year Thursday night, where they announced the official results from Wednesday's vote on the 2013 budget.
The official results showed that 777 people voted in Wednesday's election, with 492 voting for the budget while 285 people voted against it.
"This is a sign the people in the community love our library," said Board President Aney Paul.
The New City library's budget for 2013 will be $4,925,000.
"It's wonderful," said New City Library Director Chuck McMorran. "The people voted for the budget in a pretty resounding majority."
He said that when he congratulated his staff Thursday morning, he told them the budget didn't pass because of something they did in the past few days, or even weeks.
"We aim to provide quality service every day," he said. "We want the New City Library to have a reputation of good quality service to the people."
He said they plan to continue servicing the needs of the community, a lot of which now have to deal with moving things online.
“We want to appeal to both groups,” he said. “We want people who like things digital to use the library, as well as those who love actual paper.”
The 777 vote total is 150 votes less than last years’ budget tally, which saw close to 1,000 votes. McMorran said the lower turnout was disappointing.
“We want to have full participation in the election process,” he said. “We invite and love all participation.”
The meeting also included the results for the three open spots on next year's Board of Trustees. The winners were incumbent Olahannan Poulose and newcomers Anthony Feliciano and Joseph Reiter, none of whom were at the meeting.
Reiter finished with the highest vote total at 330 votes, followed by Feliciano with 310, Poulose with 297, Martus Granirer with 199 and Frank Grandel with 175.
On Thursday, the board also voted on officers for next year. All four positions only had one person nominated, so a slate vote by Paul voted in all four members. Paul will step down after the past two years as president, but remains on the board. She will join the Rockland County Legislature after winning her election on Nov. 8.
Next year's president will be Terri Thal, who was the secretary and treasurer, and has been on the board since 2003. The vice president will be Matthew Mulrooney, who is taking over for Jeffrey Greenberg. Greenberg will become the board's treasurer next year. The secretary will be Ed Kallen.
During the director's report, McMorran said the new carpet in the library is about 90 percent down, and he's meeting with the people installing it on Monday to review the status for the rest of the project. The library was recently closed for three days, from Dec. 5 to 7, because of an upgrade to the circulation software. McMorran said that while it hurt to close the library for a few days, it also allowed for a lot of the carpet to installed.
