Magician Entertains Families at New City Library

Steve Woyce performed magic for children and adults.

Magician Steve Woyce entertained children and adults with art tricks, ventriloquism, and “musical magic” at the New City Library Thursday.  Around 60 people, the majority of whom were children ages three to 10, attended the magic show, which lasted approximately 40 minutes.

“It was very cute,” said Linda, a mother of two of the children in the audience. “I thought it was very age-appropriate. The kids seemed to really enjoy it.”

The show, which Woyce entitled “Around the World Magic Show,” started out with Woyce asking the children questions about their activities at the library and what genres of books they like to read.  After talking about the library, he performed a series of interactive tricks involving artwork and magically coloring in animals on tissue paper.

Woyce then started taking volunteers. A girl named Jessie left the stage with a hat made of art paper while a boy named Robbie got on stage to create his own cartoon character, aptly named “Robbie.”  Woyce did another trick involving arts and crafts, this time introducing the phrase “One world, many stories,” which the children were to recite in order to magically color a painting.

Sam the snake literally snuck onto the scene next, emerging from a basket held by Woyce to the delight and fright of the children. The toy snake, an accomplished mind reader according to Woyce, performed a few tricks of his own, including a card trick with a volunteer named Michael.

Woyce followed up with a ventriloquist act using George the bird, singing to the children and comically talking back to himself.  After that, a volunteer named Ashley helped make a jumbo pizza in the final trick before the finale.

The magic show concluded with Woyce performing art-themed tricks to music in an act he called “musical magic.”  At the end, he pulled Henry the magical rabbit out of a cage and gave every child a chance to pet the animal while it rested in his hat.

“The review was it was an excellent show,” said Gloria St. George, speaking for her two grandchildren. “The kids had a lot of fun. They liked the rabbit the most.  My favorite part was the finale.”

Her grandson Michael echoed that sentiment.

“The rabbit was my favorite part,” he said.
