Number Of Homeless Students Increasing In Clarkstown
35 homeless students in district
In the Clarkstown School District, the number of homeless students has increased from one child three years ago to 35 children this year. The district is trying to help with the establishment of a food pantry at the Birchwood School and plans to start a drive to collect clothing donations.
School Superintendent Margaret Keller-Cogan said the district has identified 35 homeless students. There are some students whose families do not have running water and may not have other operating utilities. Often they will not speak to anyone about their family’s situation but it is the teachers or other staff members who notice.
She thinks the majority of the homeless students attend the Lakewood and Congers elementary schools. Keller-Cogan said there are students who arrive at the Birchwood School in West Nyack before classes begin so they can take a shower or wash their clothes because they do not have regular access to those types of facilities.
Principal Jonathan Slaybaugh and members of the Birchwood staff started a food pantry in September when they realized numerous students’ families were struggling financially. Community organizations have responded quickly to assist the pantry.
Birchwood’s application to the Rockland Community Foundation brought in $500. When Keller-Cogan spoke about the food pantry at a New City Rotary meeting earlier this month, a donor who wishes to remain anonymous gave her a $1,000 contribution. Since then, Rotary members have raised an additional $1,180. She said the response has been remarkable with almost $3,000 donated for the pantry in just a few weeks.
The clothing drive is in the organizing stages. The superintendent said the district will collect clothing by sizes: children’s 2T to 4T; 4 to 6; 6 to 8; 8 to10; 10 to 24 and women's and men's clothing in small, medium and large.
“If people can bundle them in plastic bags by size and gender and drop them off in the District Office, we will help with the sorting,” she said.
Keller-Cogan said Clarkstown is not the only Rockland school district with homeless students. She said Joel Klein, the interim superintendent of the East Ramapo School District, spoke about the problem last week and said his district has 350 homeless students.

This is so sad that this can happen to families but especially sad that it is happening in the United States. Too many people are now suffering---homeless, jobless and hungry.

I would like to ask my favorite taxpayer funded charity, the Clarkstown PBA, to step up to the plate. If each member of the CPD would donate one of their unused sick days, that would total $100,000. If they would each donate 5 of their 24 sick days/year, which they generally cash in, that would be $500,000.

Very classy of you to take a topic like homeless kids and turn it into a slight on the police department. Always elegant Mike.
The PBA donates tens of thousands of dollars to various charities each year. Just last weekend they donated toys to People to People for local children who otherwise would have recieved no presents this year. That is one very small example of what is done on a regular basis. I'm willing to bet they'd be happy to donate to this cause as well. How about you MIke? Donating anything other than left field comments?

I have donated countless hours of my time and thousands of dollars to the Clarkstown Taxpayer Group which has been responsible for the minimal tax increases of the past three years (one or two percent). Before our organization was founded, Clarkstown raised taxes 5 to 6 percent. I was also personally responsible for exposing the Mary Loeffler scam and having her leave government, and have introduced many other initiatives to the town board which will save taxpayer money if enacted. I am also an active member of the New City Rotary which donates time and money to worthwhile charities and causes. If you'd like to see what our taxpayer group has been doing, please log onto our website www.clarkstowntaxpayers.com

Ben, Please understand that I am not slamming the cops. I just feel that is my duty to keep our citizenry apprised of the ridiculous benefit packages that our town administration "negotiates" with the PBA.

I had no idea this homeless issue existed in Clarkstown. Thank you Robin for bringing it to the public's attention.

People to People - Rockland's Food Pantry - works to feed Rockland's hungry. We see more people coming to us for food every week...including families from Clarkstown. I will reach out to the Clarkstown School District to see how People to People can help. The last thing this county needs is ANOTHER food pantry. What it does need is for groups to work together better. Thanks.

On another note -- The Clarkstown police donated hundreds of dollars worth of toys to People to People this holiday season which were distributed to children in low-income families.

Diane, While it is a good thing that the Clarkstown PBA donates thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars a year to worthwhile charities and causes, the unused sick days that their members cash in each year (that we all pay for) total about $2,000,000/year. I hope our Governor will propose legislation that will require sick days to be use em or lose em. To me, it feels like they are taking hundreds of dollars and giving back the spare change.
