Offer Accepted For Reuben Gittelman Hebrew Day School Property

The Board of Trustees of the voted on Monday night to accept the offer from Ashar of Monsey to purchase the building and property.  Board Vice President Debbie Roth said two offers were considered at the meeting.

“Last night we just discussed two offers,” she said. “It was Ashar and the Town of Clarkstown.”

Roth said the board is hoping to have a signed contract soon, possibly within several weeks. 

Clarkstown Town Supervisor Alex Gromack was notified of the board’s decision today. He said he was told the board felt it was important for the facility to continue as a Jewish Day School.

Ashar is also known as the Adolph H. Schreiber Hebrew Academy of Rockland County. It is located on Highview Road in Monsey and has students enrolled from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Founded in 1954, the yeshiva day school provides Jewish and general studies education for boys and girls.

Virginia Feldman, president of the board of RGHDS, announced to parents and staff in early January that the school was closing after 40 years of educating students.  Its enrollment has been steadily declining over the past few years. 

Clarkstown expressed an interest in the New Hempstead Road property as a possibly replacement for the aging Street Community Center.  Gromack said the town board will now move forward with reviewing the plans outlined for renovating the Street Community Center.  He expects the decision process to be completed within 30 to 45 days.

The RGHDS building is 20 years old and sits on approximately 10 acres. will close in June when the school year ends.
