Sorry to see it go. There are buildings in worse shape that need to be torn down.

I'll never forget those many holiday shopping days when I was stuck in traffic for 45 minutes waiting to get up Route 59 to the Nanuet Mall .... and every parking spot and every bit of space in the mall was jammed. Won't forget the many trip to Mario's for haircuts when my son was just 4 or 5.

I grew up hanging out at the mall. . . Taking the Clarkstown Mini bus to the mall in the 80s was the thing to do before I got my license . . . and yes, every boy got their hair cut back then at "Mario's chop shop" . . . Hermans was the only sporting goods chain in rockland . . . The Hungry Lion Restaurant . . . . Does anyone remember what the food court was before it was the food court, it was a single screen movie theater, I saw "Hoosiers" there . . . I remember going to autograph signings at the sports memorabelia store, Anders Hedberg of the New York Rangers was there. I also met "Speedy Delivery" from the Mr. Rogers show at the mall...I have very fond memories of it growing up.

For Whom The Bell Tolls...
Risa Hoag says:

"Simon Properties will tear down the Nanuet Mall to build a "Main Street"... we have a Main Street .. no one shops there. Nanuet's Main Street is unappealing without plans for improvement"
I remember the proposal to build the Palisades Mall which stands today as an architectural blight. The Nanuet Mall had all the beautiful features that a shopping center ought to have, yet everyone knew its death knell had sounded when the bell rang for Palisades.
Shirley Lasker said that today the Palisades Mall would never happen. Back then was there a plan asking 'what if' questions with respect to Nyack and Nanuet? The film 'Megamall' indicates that Pyramid came equipped with lawyers AND deep pockets and that was that.

Unfortunately when the head of the Planning Board, Shirley Thormann, asks about dust during demolition it's too late to ask 'what if' for Nanuet.

So "now is NOT the time", Ms Hoag.
Say goodbye to Nanuet's businesses; the two Shirleys have tolled the bell.
It tolls for thee!

Personally I liked the Nanuet Mall and I think if they had kept Boscovs( which I and MANY liked) and put in a movie theater and more name stores it would have worked. Initially everyone was excited about the new Palisades Mall but I think an upgrade to Nanuet Mall then would have worked. Seems a shame to knock it all down---just needed updating and new repaved driveways and parking lot.

Watched the Nanuet Mall being built. When I revisit Nanuet it is/was a pleasure to stroll the Mall - with memories abounding of days of youth spent there. Even today the Nanuet Mall looks so much better than that pig-sty in the swamp. As for downtown Nanuet --the best place for your choice of Pizza.
Long timer at the mall

I have worked at the Nanuet Mall for nearly 3 decades ......I remember the old days during the Holidays when the parking lots were jammed full of cars and you had to hunt for a space....I remember the days before the food court.....Burger King was located immediately outside the Sears 2nd floor mall entrance with a long corridor beside BK leading to the movie theater....I saw a number of movies in that theater when growing up....When they built the Food Court, Burger King was 'pushed back' to the rear of the food court....If the Palisades Mall were never built, I feel that the Nanuet Mall would still be thriving today..... I also remember the days back in the 70's as a kid when I used to take the Clarkstowm Mini-trans to the Mall on Saturdays.....Back then, it cost 25 cents each way to ride the Mini-bus.
