Strong Winds Expected Today in New City

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties.

Strong and gusty winds—up to 50 mph—are the biggest hazard expected from a day of rain and thunderstorms. The wind advisory is in effect from noon to midnight.

"Highest threat potential is from this afternoon through this evening. This potential will be enhanced in areas of heavy showers or thunderstorms," the National Weather Service (NWS) states in today's weather alert for the lower Hudson Valley.

The heaviest rains are anticipated from late afternoon into the evening. The possible impact of the winds and rain: downed power lines, downed trees and power outages, the NWS says.

Winds this strong can also make driving difficult, particularly for vehicles with high profiles (such as SUVs and trucks), the NWS warns.
