The New York Giants will play the New England Patriots 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Super Bowl XLVI, a rematch of the Giants' 17-14 victory in Super Bowl XLII.
Everybody knows that. The question is who will win it.
Patch turned to local experts, high school football coaches, to tell us who will win and why.
One thing they agreed upon is that their teams can benefit from greater interest when the Giants or Jets do well.
"I do believe the excitement of a local team playing in the Super Bowl does inspire or at least spur more interest towards our participation numbers," Clarkstown North Coach Joe Trongone said. "That, along with having success the last two seasons with back-to-back playoff appearances has definitely motivated more of the student body at North to participate in football. Our kids are excited and feed off each others motivation. Football for both Clarkstown North and South is on the rise."
"I think so," Pearl River Head Coach Jeff Michael said. "When the Jets are doing well and the Giants are doing well, we've seen a bump in the numbers the last couple of seasons. The more local coverage football teams get, the more younger kids want to be football palyers. For the longest time, everybody wanted to play baseball with the Mets and Yankees dong well. Now it is trending to football, which is nice to see."
Predictions
Michael Scarpelli, Clarkstown South -- Patriots
"I would have to say, being a Jet fan, I'm Going with New England."
"I hope its a great game, I'm a fan of the competition, the strategy and struggle of football. I think football season is a great time of the year. I truly believe it inspires everyone to be a fan, its so easy to get caught up in the excitement of big games and instantly become a fan, expert and coach! Its awesome fun for all."
Joe Trongone, Clarkstown North -- Giants
"I think it's going to be a great game, but unlike Mike I have to go with the Giants. I have been a Giants fan all my life. I love their style of football, they play good defense and control the clock. GO BIG BLUE! My prediction: 24-21."
Jeff Michael, Pearl River -- Giants
"I'm a Jets fan, so this is a no-win situation for me. If I had to pick, i'd go with the Giants over the Patirots. The reason why is their defense has been playing incredibly well. I look at the teams beat to get to Super Bowl. Shutting down Green Bay and beating San Francisco. When push comes to shove, offense wins games, but defense wins championships. It's a cliche, but it’s true. I think the defense will pressure (Patriots quarterback) Tom Brady. We might see history repeat itself."
Phil Carbone, Nanuet -- Giants
"The Giants will need to control the passing game, but in particular focus on the tight end. On the flip side, the Patriots are going to have to control the Giants running game. 26-21 Giants."
Paul Villanueva, Albertus Magnus -- Giants
"Giants 29-20. Most people are talking about the Giants d-line getting to Brady. That'll be important, but I think the giants running game can be the real key to this game. If (Ahmad) Bradshaw and (Brandon) Jacobs get going, that will open the Patriots' defense to some big plays. The Giants really need to be ready for the Patriots' running game as well.
