Will Smith of New City and several of his friends spent four hours on Sunday collecting pet food and supplies and donations for . Smith, a junior at Clarkstown North High School, decided to help after having volunteered at the Pomona shelter for several months and learning about its financial difficulties and the condition of the building.

Smith and his friends also asked people to sign a petition in support of Hi-Tor. They displayed homemade signs that read "Have A Heart; Donate; Save the Shelter; What will happen to the animals?" while standing in front of PetSmart in Nanuet.
