Mini Boston Cream Cupcakes for Valentine's Day

A Blog Post from Marilyn Johnson—Culinary/Lifestyle blogger, cookie decorater, business owner, college empty nester, wife

I recently attended a class at Sur la Table in Newport Beach where we made Boston Cream Cupcakes among other flavors.  Have you ever attended a cooking class? (Editor's Note: For cooking classes nearby, check out the Food Evolution in Bardonia)  It's a fun way to spend the morning.  People from all levels of experience attend.  I was one of the more experienced bakers there but I always learn something I didn't know before because the instructors have professional training and they are happy to share their knowledge. My work station included four other women.  Two were friends who were admittingly there for social reasons where I was instantly invited to join in their conversations. The other was a mother and her very inexperienced grown…

Nanuet HS Hosts Senior All County Music Festival (VIDEO)

The county’s best student musicians and singers display their skills at annual two-part concert

Rockland’s student musicians treated friends and family to a two-part music festival at Nanuet HS on Saturday afternoon. The event was run by the Rockland County Music Educators Association (RCMEA) and is one of the season’s highlights. Playing and singing in the Festival were 289 students who represent 13 schools across the county. Nanuet’s Director of Music and this year’s Site Chair, Dr. Jack Gremli, noted that in addition to RCMEA staff, the festival is an undertaking that requires the help and participation of Nanuet’s whole music faculty. “The entire music department is sharing the responsibility of Site Chair, although I get the title, and Mr. Mark Skaba is actually the go-to guy on site because I’m doubling as the Women’s Chorus …

Enchanted and Enchanting: Opera from the MET [Video]

The latest Live-in-HD-Met-Opera is a tempestuous dream (Shakes.).

Catch the encore of this delightful Opera in HD on Feb. 8 at 6:30 PM at City Center 15 in White Plains and NewRoc 18 in New Rochelle.  A delightfully entertaining surprise: the Movie World-Premiere of The Enchanted Island, the newest opera in the Live-at-the-Met-in-HD series that took place on Jan. 21 locally and in more than 1,600 movie houses around the globe.  Surprising also in that there was quite a huge audience despite the debilitating snowstorm raging at matinee time. It proves again that we have a vast number of truly dedicated opera lovers in Westchester.  The Enchanted Island is a pastiche of arias by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau and several lesser-known Baroque composers. All are offered to us (in English,) via a clever libretto …

It sounds totally wonderful, and I can only regret not having seen it, but we prefer to see opera at the Met and view the entire stage all the time--andere Laender, usw--. However Marlies' fascinating articles make me wonder whether we may be mistaken. Joseph B. Russell   more ›

Nanuet HS Prepares to Host Senior All County Music Festival

The concert is Saturday, Feb 4 at 3 p.m. for Band & Women’s Chorus and 5 p.m. for Orchestra and Mixed Chorus at Nanuet HS; $8 gets you into both performances

The Rockland County Music Educators Association will hold its annual Senior All County Music Festival at Nanuet High School on Saturday afternoon following an intense two days of rehearsal. The Senior All County Band, Women’s Chorus, Orchestra and Mixed Chorus will be performing. This year the position of Orchestra Chair is held by Nanuet’s Katherine Rife. The position can be challenging as it’s time intensive and requires a lot of effort in addition to her regular duties.  The Chair is responsible for, among other things, finding a conductor, producing a list of students that are eligible to participate, selecting music and fitting everyone’s schedule together.  In the end, Rife says it’s her job to “make it pleasant for the conductor …

Knickerbocker Brings In Crowds Despite Melting Ice

The sixth annual Knickerbocker Ice Festival took place over the weekend at Rockland Lake

There was no igloo-building race at this weekend’s Knickerbocker Ice Festival at Rockland Lake State Park, but there might as well have been. Due to a winter with light snow so far and temperatures in the 40s, there wasn’t much ice at the sixth annual Ice Festival. And mostly all snow had melted by Saturday. Still, at the entrance of the festival there were large piles of snow that groups could use to build igloos. Rockland Country Day School, of Congers, was one group to sign up to build an igloo, and spent the first few hours of the festival on Saturday to construct one six-plus feet tall. Kim Morcate, head of the Rockland Country Day School, said she hoped it would make it through the night. Sill, Morcate and the teachers, students …

Ice Sculptures Awe at Rockland Lake State Park

Knickerbocker Ice Festival draws large crowds despite warmer temperatures.

Several large ice sculptures began to show the effects of the unseasonably mild temperatures Saturday afternoon at the annual Knickerbocker Ice Festival at Rockland Lake State Park. Still, people were amazed as they walked past the incredible works of art carved from blocks of ice which included a wolf, an octopus and a horse-drawn wagon.   Many people took to hiking around the lake while learning some of the park's history from signs posted along the trail. Nearby, children climbed on large piles of snow in the event's Igloo Village while others formed blocks out of the snow and built their own. There were sponsor tents shaped like an ice cave, an art show and many games available for families during the event which also runs tomorrow …

This Weekend: Ice Skating Park Opens In Congers

It's open from 12-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event is free for Clarkstown residents and $1 for non-residents. The town also has skate rentals at the rink.

Clarkstown is hopping on board with the 'ice' theme since the Knickerbocker Ice Festival is this weekend. The Town of Clarkstown is opening its ice skating rink, which uses “synthetic ice” that has been put down at the roller rink at Congers Lake Memorial Park—6 Gilchrest Road, Congers. The Knickerbocker festival is at Rockland Lake State Park so Clarkstown provided transportation between the festival and the ice rink. Mini Trans will be shuttling people between the two locations about every 10 minutes. The rink will be open from 12-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The buses will leave from Rockland Lake State Park from the north parking lot or parking lot 1, from the large administration building. Councilwoman Stephanie Hausner said to …

Clarkstown South Junior Heading To The GRAMMY Awards

Sam Hart is one of 30 high school students in the Grammy Camp - Jazz Session

Sam Hart like many other 16-year-olds has started thinking about where he wants to attend college but isn’t totally sure yet.  He listens to wide range of musical genres to see what he likes and in a couple of weeks he’ll fly out to Los Angeles to open for Paul McCartney. Ok, so the third one isn’t exactly a rite of passage for 16-year-olds. But for Hart of New City and 29 other high school students around the country, that’s just one of the gigs they’ll be playing in the week leading up to the 54th GRAMMY Awards on Thursday, Feb. 12. The GRAMMYs are the only peer-presented award to honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position Hart, a …

Sculptor Looking Forward To Knickerbocker Festival

John Hedbavny, of Highland, N.Y., will compete in his fourth Knickerbocker Ice Festival

John Hedbavny likes his ice silent. In fact, it’s one the reasons that for the past eight years, he’s been a professional ice sculptor after graduating from the Culinary Institute of Americas and working a chef in the food service industry before that. “Working in kitchens, there are a lot of people that talk back to you or are rude to you,” he said. “Ice doesn’t talk back. It’s a whole different world of stress.” Of course, that’s not the only reason Hedbavny has kept up sculpting, though. He also said he likes it because “it’s an art and medium that’s here one day and gone the next.” Hedbavny, of Highland, N.Y., has sculpted ice for more than 10 years on and off. He said he first became interested in it after watching colleagues do it …
