Vincent Reda says volunteers will be heading to New Hampshire for its primary
Rockland County Republican Committee Chairman Vincent Reda said campaign work for the Presidential candidacy of Mitt Romney is well underway in New York. “We are preparing all the groundwork for the campaign,” said Reda, who was one of four or five initial Romney campaign workers in the state. He and other organizers are gathering several hundred volunteers to go to New Hampshire this weekend to make phone calls and hand out literature. Reda went to Albany for meetings yesterday and today to work with other campaign organizers to coordinate the effort. Passage of referendum to consolidate departments anticipated
By almost the same margins, Clarkstown voters on Tuesday supported one town wide referendum and opposed a second. Almost 16,000 voters made the yes or no decision for each proposal. They supported department consolidation but rejected changing the highway superintendent to an appointed position. “It went exactly as I thought would be,” said Town Supervisor Alex Gromack of the voters’ response to the proposals. The referendum authorizing the elimination of the Receiver of Taxes office and consolidating its powers and duties with the Town Clerk’s office passed with 12,031 yes votes to 3,889 no votes. Many Rockland incumbents were re-elected in Tuesday's local elections, but voters did make some changes in their town and village governments. Incumbent supervisors were defeated in Stony Point and Orangetown, and Nyack has a new mayor. After the voting, candidates gathered throughout the county to tally the votes, cheer on the winners and console the defeated.

Voters approve and defeat proposals by almost three to one vote
The two Clarkstown Referendums on the ballot drew strong responses from voters. Proposal Number One, Town Proposition Number One to consolidate the duties of the Receiver of Taxes with the Town Clerk's Office was passed with 75 percent of the vote. Proposal Number Two received the opposite reaction from voters who disagreed with it. The unofficial vote tally for Proposal One was 12,031 or 75 percent in favor to 3,889 or 24 percent. Voters soundly defeated Proposal Number Two, Town Proposition Number Two, 11,460 opposed to 4,361 in favor. The referendum would have changed the town superintendent of highways from an elected post to an appointed one. Unofficial results show Gerber receiving more than 53 percent of vote
Clarkstown Town Justice Incumbent Howard Gerber keeps his seat on the bench according to the unofficial results. Gerber, who has served four years as Town Justice ran against Antonio Reda. Gerber, 54, received 8,794 votes or 53 percent of those cast in the race. He is a Democract from Valley Cottage. Reda had the Republican, Independence, Conservative and Working Families lines and received 7,676 votes or 46 percent of the votes. "I'm happy to continue doing the job I've been doing for the past four and a half years," said Gerber. "You can do it on one party line. Ed Day returns to the county legislature after having received 3,201 vote according to the Board of Elections' unofficial results. The New City resident had no opponent as he sought his third term representing District 5. "The county is in a crisis," said Day. "We're looking forward now to putting the county on the road to fiscal responsbility. And that's where those six people who represent this party, the people of this community, that's where this work is going to happen. And I'm proud to be part of that." Day, 60, ran on the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Working Families tickets.
Frank Sparaco re-elected to second term
Incumbent Frank Sparaco will serve a second term in the county legislature representing District 11. The unofficial vote count has Sparaco with 2,229 votes and his challenger Bob Milone with 18,84 votes. “I’m going to work to continue to fight to bring fiscal responsibility to county government,” said Sparaco, minority leader of the legislature. The 34-year-old from Valley Cottage had the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Working Families lines. Challenger Bob Milone of Congers had the Democratic line.

Unofficial results from elections officials in Rockland show Wayne Ballard winning re-election as highway superintendent by a difference of 1,143 votes - 9,070 to 7927. Ballard received 53 percent of the vote compared to Malone's 46 percent. "Who would have ever imagined in just one election there would have been: petitions, challenges to petitions, court cases on two different party lines, a primary, OTB (opportunity to ballot), a caucus, negative campaigning the likes I have never seen before," Ballard told the crowd at the Comfort Inn. Christopher Carey beats Christopher Martone for legislative seat
Christopher Carey won the voters' approval to represent them in County Legislative District 9. The Board of Elections' unofficial results have him receiving 2,204 votes to Christopher Martone's 1,658 votes. Carey's name appeared on the Republican, Conservative, and Independence tickets. His opponent, Martone, ran on the Democrat and Working Families lines. "I am so proud of the campaign that we ran," he said. "We kept it about the issues and who was more qualified to be the District 9 legislator." Carey, 49, is a Bardonia resident. Martone of New City is 31. District 9 encompasses all of Bardonia, parts of Nanuet and New City, and small slivers of Pomona and West Nyack.
Incumbent elected to first full term
Incumbent Clarkstown Town Clerk Justin Sweet was elected to his first full term with 10,942 votes. Unofficial results from the Board of Elections give Sweet 66 percent of the vote compared to challenger Diane Holland's 33 percent or 5,437 votes. "I'm glad the voters heard my message and appreciated all the great work we've done," said Sweet. Considering that our system is SUPPOSED to be bottom up, NOT top down, can anyone explain to me why NOT A SINGLE COMMITTEE MEMBER was involved in this decision? This was a typical, business-as-usual "executive decision" made among the Chairs of each county. I repeat: this matter WAS NEVER BROUGHT BEFORE THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.
