Women’s History Month Events at Rockland Community College. Share the celebration of the lives and contributions of women during Women’s History Month. The national theme this year is women’s education and empowerment.  All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.  

Tuesday, March 13, 1:30 – 3:00 pm

Lecture: Politics and Diplomacy in the Ottoman Harem

Technology Center, Room 8180 (Ellipse)

Dino Ritsatos, RCC Adjunct Instructor of History, will explore the political and diplomatic roles of women in the Ottoman harem of the 16^th and 17^th centuries. Mr. Ritsatos will explain how the harem – a complex hierarchy of women from diverse backgrounds – exerted decisive influence on the foreign and domestic policies of the Sultans.

Lecture/Slide Show: Mad Men Comes to RCC!

Join Pat Lazar, Associate Professor of Psychology, and Dr. David Beisel, Professor of History, as their presentation and slide show transports you to the era of the 1950s through the 1970s. Using psychological and historical perspectives, they will examine changing roles, misogynistic treatment, and stereotypes of women as depicted in the popular AMC Network TV series Mad Men. Whether or not you’re an avid fan of the show, it promises to be fascinating and fun.

Performance:  Flowers Aren’t Enough

Cultural Arts Theater

Naomi Ackerman will perform "Flowers Aren't Enough," a dramatic monologue that tells the story of Michal, a young woman from an upper-middle-class family who finds herself in an abusive relationship. The monologue is woven from true stories graciously shared by women willing to talk about their all-too-common experiences. Please join us after the show for a discussion with Naomi Ackerman and representatives from Rockland Family Shelter - Lynn Sheinkin, Deputy Executive Director of Programming and Services and Lynn Goldblatt, Coordinator of Jewish Orthodox Community Services, Project Tikvah.
