On Columbus Day, October 8, 2012, Cub Scouts Pack 46 from New City hosted a food drive outside Shop Rite. Approximately 40 cub scouts took turns in shifts over an 8-hour day for this community service project. That’s at least 320 hours of service; not including the time that leaders and parents put in.
Pack 46 collected for People to People, St. Ann Parish/Pantry and Hi-Tor Animal Shelter. The scouts' efforts paid off as several parents delivered over 900 pounds of food to People to People. St. Ann’s received 70 jars of peanut butter and 53 of jelly. Numerous bags and cans of dog and cat food, as well as $87 was given to Hi-Tor Animal Shelter.
This service project allowed the scouts to do most of the work. While dressed in their uniforms, scouts handed out flyers and asked patrons to please consider making a donation on their way out of the store. Scouts then sorted the donations and placed items in corresponding boxes. Of course, this project would not have been a huge success without the support of so many generous shoppers!
