A Fight Master Workshop will be held at Rockland Community College from August 6 to August 18. Broadway Fight Director J. David Brimmer is coming to RCC this summer to teach an intensive two-week workshop in professional stage fighting.
Brimmer’s background in the sport of fencing made him a natural resource when other actors asked him for help in staging realistic fight scenes for Broadway. A near tragedy while coaching a friend through a swordplay scene convinced him of the need for actors to train and gain certification to ensure their safety as well as being able to portray realistic scenes.
Brimmer has a busy schedule, teaching acting and doing voice-over work in addition to consulting and coaching stars of stage and screen in the fine points of stage fighting. His workshops are fully participatory, attendees learn highly specialized skills for safely enacting dramatic realistic fight scenes - from weapon handling to choreography. He is one of only 19 certified SAFD (Society of American Fight Directors) Fight Masters in the country.
The workshop will focus on Broadsword Skills and attendees have an opportunity to qualify in the SAFD proficiency test for certification. All of last year’s 12 attendees passed their proficiency test in Smallsword. Brimmer will also be offering Skills Proficiency Renewals in Sword & Shield & Knife. This summer’s workshop will also include discussions and training in how to do death and dying scenes well - and a special segment on creating realistic looking injuries and wounds, the Stage Blood Workshop.
The Stage & Film Actor-Combatant Qualification in Professional Stage Combat Workshop costs $750, and will run from August 6-18 (August 1 is the application deadline). Enrollment is limited to provide a high degree of personal instruction, and you must be at least 18 years old to attend.
