On Sunday, several dozen parents and students from Adolph Schreiber Hebrew Academy of Rockland,(ASHAR) in New City, convened on the corner of Route 306 and Brick Church Road as part of a school-initiated Keep Rockland Beautiful clean-up.
Armed with rubber gloves, trash and recycling bags, and
grabbers provided by Keep Rockland Beautiful (keeprocklandbeautiful.org), the smiling crews climbed through bushes and bramble to retrieve discraded snack
"The wind pushes trash up against the cemetery walls
and into the hedges," said Jonathan Kaufman of Wesley Hills, a local landscaper who maintains the property. "This will really make it easier to work."
Drivers honked, waved, and paused to express thanks to
the green-shirted youths as they covered a quarter-mile stretch of the road. For their part, the kids enjoyed the fresh air and the feeling of accomplishment in doing something good. The brainchild of Bruce Klein, an
ASHAR board member, this clean-up was completely voluntary.
Students, Board members, and Administration participated. Menachem Jacobson, 9-year old son of Asst. Principal Debby Jacobson, noted, "We found four hubcaps
and a tire. I'm looking for the engine!"
