Children with Disabilities to Get Free Extra School Help from RILC

Homework and studying can be difficult for most students, and trying for parents. For children with disabilities in grades 3 – 8 Rockland Independent Living Center has a new program called “Bridge to Success” that provides free homework and studying help.

The Bridge to Success program takes place on Mondays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the RILC offices located at 873 Route 45, Suite 108, in New City. Parents must register their children via an application process. Bridge to Success offers an array of services designed to assist children with disabilities to achieve success in their homework, studying and learning. Students will have access to the Lexia Literacy Program and RILC will provide families with educational support and advocacy on behalf of their children.

“We are finding from educators in the county that some students with disabilities often fail in school due to not completing their homework,” said George Hoehmann, CEO and Executive Director of Rockland Independent Living Center. “RILC is committed to providing opportunities for people with disabilities, including the very young, and we want to get at the heart of the matter by getting these kids the homework help they need to achieve their maximum potential.”

Mr. Hoehmann said Bridge to Success will employ volunteer peer tutors to provide one-on-one support for students with disabilities to help them achieve academic success. RILC will work with the students’ IEPs (Individual Education Plans) where applicable and will communicate progress with their teachers with parent permission.
