County Exec-elect Ed Day Helps RILC Distribute ‘Ready to Cook Thanksgiving Food’ to 50 Families in Need and with Disabilities in Rockland County

Rockland County Executive-elect Ed Day stopped by New City-based nonprofit Rockland Independent Living Center (RILC) on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 27, to help RILC Executive Director George Hoehmann distribute 50 “Thanksgiving in a Bag” dinners to Rockland residents in need and with disabilities.  The ready-to-cook food donations, which included a frozen turkey and all dinner “trimmings” to feed a family of four, were made possible through a grant from Inserra ShopRite, the Rockland Community Foundation and the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program.

“I applaud RILC for coordinating this important effort,” Mr. Day said. “Too many people in Rockland go hungry too often and at this time of Thanksgiving and during the holidays it’s even more critical that people who are in need are helped.

“I’m proud that the people of Rockland respond so generously to help their fellow citizens and organizations like RILC make sure food donations get into the homes that really need the help,” he said.

The 50 Rockland families in need (meet the federal guidelines for poverty -- food insecure) and they or someone in their family has a disability participate in RILC’s year-round food pantry. The RILC food pantry serves more than 175 families consisting of nearly 600 people every month. In addition, the local Lions Club assisted in donating food.
