After the Storm: Roads Open, No Power Outages in Rockland

Transport of Rockland buses running on normal Saturday schedule.

As Rockland County residents awoke this morning with more than a foot of snow on the ground, they found a much different situation than storms that rocked the county in 2012.

Police say major roads are open and they only had a few minor accidents overnight as the storm that started Friday afternoon continued to dump snow on the county until early this morning.

Orange and Rockland Utilities is reporting that the are no power outages this morning in Rockland County. O&R says its crews have restored electric service to 677 customers who have so far lost power as a result of the winter storm.

Crews have also responded to an additional 144 partial power conditions throughout the O&R service territory, which includes 300,000 electric customers in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

O&R employees and contractors were mobilized at 8 a.m. Friday. Crews worked throughout the day and night to address outages as they occurred. O&R reports those crews to stand by to access any reported damage locations and restore electric service as necessary to customers impacted by the storm.

New City Fire Chief Kenny Flynn said a New City home was damaged by a fire that was reported at about 3:30 a.m. A 69-year-old homeowner was taken to Nyack Hospital for treatment of apparent smoke inhalation.

Flynn noted the fire was close to becoming a tragedy because the homeowner delayed calling for help for 15 to 30 minutes as he tried to put the fire out himself.

But aside from that one close-call, Flynn said the storm only resulted in a handful of emergency calls for the fire department. The one report of a downed utility line his department received turned out to be a false alarm.

Rockland County reports that Transport of Rockland bus service, which shut down Friday evening, has resumed and is on a normal Saturday schedule. However, some delays are expected because of the snow.

Today, O&R urges its customers to keep the gas equipment outside of their homes clear of snow and ice buildup as a safety precaution.

If the equipment that regulates the natural gas flow into homes and buildings becomesclogged with snow or caked with ice, the effectiveness of that equipment could becompromised, leading to the possibility of a gas service interruption, safety issues or evensevere health problems.

Also, snow and ice buildup on a natural gas meter, regulator or regulator vent line couldmake O&R equipment inaccessible to O&R responders in the case of an emergency. Damage to the equipment could result due to excessive stress from the weight of ice andsnow buildup or from falling icicles.

In addition, snow drifts that cover appliance vents are a potential safety concern. Drifting snow may block appliance intake and exhaust vents, causing the appliances to fail or tobuild up dangerous carbon monoxide fumes.

Also, to avoid damage risk, O&R urges snow removal operations to steer clear of plowing near O&R natural gas equipment and to dump and pile plowed snow away from O&R natural gas equipment.

I had to go to work this morning and considering the type of storm we had last night kudos to the Rockland County & the Clarkstown Highway departments. Fantastic job!
Mike Hirsch February 9, 2013 at 11:07 pm
I guess it was the word hero, which I think is overused today. If you had said good job, I would have been fine with that. Let's use the word hero for our volunteer firemen, who put themselves in harm's way on their own time and for zero dollars, or for you, for that matter, who has worked tirelessley in our community for the last 20 years without any thought for what you could get out of it. I cleaned my walks and driveway with my young son today. I always enjoy doing physical work and always enjoy making my sons work also. I also thought the highway department did a good job.
amy durbin February 9, 2013 at 11:19 pm
I agree Mitch. Thank you guys and gals.
Hilary Kunz February 10, 2013 at 01:47 am
I think Mike Hirsh, who always seems to be the first to criticize the town employees (while he was arrested for stealing from NYC & the taxpayers he claims to be so concerned about), needs to realize that many highway employees serve as those "hero volunteers". I guarantee that there were a large amount of volunteer fighters plowing the roads last night. These people who serve as both volunteer & civil servant earned Ed's kind words, and all of our appreciation & respect. They did a great job. I have NEVER heard of a "realtor, a toll collector, or a crooked contractor" who punches for work at 7am on Friday and gets home at 3:30pm on Saturday. If the fire whistle blows, I doubt I'll see the realtor, the toll collector or Mike Hirsh climbing into a firetruck to protect his neighbors after a 36 hour shift. Keep in mind Mr. Hirsh that these workers - for whom you have so much obvious resentment-live in, volunteer in and pay taxes in our community. If a small amount of praise for these hardworking individuals bothers you, I feel very sorry for you. Perhaps you need to contemplate your own value to our community before you so easily criticize others. You are a fraud.

As the wife of an employee of the Clarktown Highway Department, I would like to say that I agree with Mr. Day. My husband and the rest of the department works diligently after each and every storm to serve the community. As the mother of two young boys, ages 4 and 1, I can tell you that it is a sacrifice for us to not have my husband home during any type of severe weather. I spent the night of Hurricane Sandy bunkered down in my basement with my boys terrified and alone. The next two months, the department worked 10 hour days, 7 days a week, with only Thanksgiving and Christmas Day off. During snow storms, workers are in dangerous situations all the time. Many off the snow plows are not four wheel drive, as one would think, and I know of multiple times when my husband slid down hills sideways, and/or slid off roadways into ditches and revines. So, kudos to the department for making Clarkstown look as if we had a rainstorm yesterday as opposed to 12 inches of snow!
Watchdog February 10, 2013 at 02:08 am
Uncalled for Kunz. Mike was only pointing out that the word HERO should be reserved for people like Ed Days two sons who put themselves in harms way, one fighting in two wars and the other in training, ready to go to battle. If the Highway Workers and others on duty that night did a good job, so be it, it should be recognized properly but to call them heroes is a bit of an overstatement, even for Ed, and your characterization of Mr. Hirsch in your closing sentence is a disgrace.
Hilary Kunz February 10, 2013 at 02:20 am
I'm sorry "watchdog" are you implying that Mr Hirsh mistakenly used "realtor" "toll collector" and "construction worker", when he meant war hero, volunteer firefighter, etc.? if you feel the need to defend a hypocrite, please at least have the courage to not hide behind a psudonym.
Mike Hirsch February 10, 2013 at 02:22 am
You obviously don't know me Hilary. I do not resent any town workers. I am absolutely disgusted with the political back room deals that go on in our town and county. As far as "stealing from NYC", the NYC DA dropped those charges within a few months of filing them because there was no basis for them. The people up here who orchestrated that investigation just wanted the headline. You are obviously connected with the town in crowd in some way and don't like that I've succeeded in informing our citizens just what goes on here, but ask yourself this - why would any district attorney file larceny charges against someone just to drop them after a few months? The people who know me know what I stand for and know that I cannot be intimidated. I know that many, many people like to hear what I think on various issues because they tell me so. If you, Lifeless, and some others who benefit from the cesspool that is Clarlstown politics don't like it, too bad.
Mike Hirsch February 10, 2013 at 02:29 am
Are you spelling hypocrit S-P-A-R-A-C-O ?
Hilary Kunz February 10, 2013 at 02:56 am
Mr. Hirsch, Just the fact that you felt the need to criticize Mr.Day's appreciation of work well done, shows your contempt for the highway workers and undermines your credibility. There was no mention of politics or back room deals in the original post. It was completely non-political, a simple pat on the back for a group of employees who worked long, hard hours in hazardous conditions and gave the taxpayers what WE all pay for. The job being acknowledged was the one done by the workers, not the political appointments. I laughed out loud at your depiction of the "town in crowd"....Really?!? Are we in Jr. High?? I actually agree with you that the political pandering is disgraceful and is hurting our community, I just don't see how that transitions into a snide comment about hard working people, who volunteer, who pay the same taxes and who live in the same town as you.
Clarkstown life February 10, 2013 at 02:57 am
yea mike, people 'up here' orchestrated you getting arrested for stealing in NYC....you think too much of yourself and your group
Hilary Kunz February 10, 2013 at 03:21 am
PS... As for the question about how I spell "hypocrit", I actually spell it HYPOCRITE. Thank god for my CCSD education!
Legislator Ed Day February 10, 2013 at 04:00 am
Thanks for that compliment, Mike. And I also remember those days with my two sons sharing a shovel. Good times.
Paulette Renard February 10, 2013 at 04:22 am
I reserve the word hero for the GIs who threw themselves on hand grenades to save the lives of their comrades in France in WW2. People who do their job cleaning snow are fine people as are the nurses who worked the shifts of those who couldn't get in. But, please let's honor only those who make real sacrifices for their country not those who cleared away some snow. As to Monsieur Hirsch, the contracting business is threatened with these charges by criminal groups all the time. The prosecutor never drops them if she has a case. This one appears to have been thrown out the day it was filed. Ne dites plus!
Mike Hirsch February 10, 2013 at 04:31 am
You are looking at the world through brown shaded glasses. I was just giving my friend Ed a hard time. How you could think that I have contempt for highway workers for doing their job is a little wierd for someone with a CCSD education. Maybe you should take some adult education courses to supplement your reading comprehension abilities. I'm glad that you agree with me about our town politics. One of my brothers-in-law is a landscaper and is always out all night plowing because that is how he earns a living. No one gives him a pat on the back for doing his job. They expect it of him.
Mike Hirsch February 10, 2013 at 04:37 am
Read the papers Lifeless. The larceny charges were dropped because they were untrue, though I guess the truth doesn't matter to you. Get a life and at least have the courage to post under your own name like Hilary.
Hilary Kunz February 10, 2013 at 05:36 am
I would like to begin by apologizing to Mr. Day for how his thoughtful post was hijacked by an obviously bitter individual. Mike, don't be concerned with my level of education, as CCSD is where I learned basic skills in grammar & spelling ( from reading your posts, you obviously did not receive the same strong foundation) . Those skills served me well as I earned my Bachelors degree. However, If you need assistance here are a couple of tips: hypocrite ends with an "E" and questions end with ?. Furthermore, as the daughter of a veteran, and as the wife of a firefighter, I clearly understand the difference between a "hero" and the phrase "unsung hero". What I don't readily understand was your immediate need to belittle someone else's appreciation, or their choice of words. Your attempt at giving a "friend a hard time" in a public forum, insulted a group of people who you claim to have no contempt for. Believe me, for your information, most of these workers have nothing but contempt for you. I am sorry your brother in law is under appreciated by his clients. If, someone WERE to make a nice comment about him, using a commonly used phrase, would you downplay it? Perhaps this a tactic you reserve just for public employees? Personally, I try to always recognize, and when appropriate, reward a job well done by those who work with me (private industry). Your petty need to dismiss a sincere offer of thanks from one person to an entire group of workers is basically, just plain rude.
Mike Hirsch February 10, 2013 at 05:57 am
Again Hilary, you don't know me and are not comprehending what I wrote. I don't think that you could find one person in town that knows me that thinks that I'm bitter about anything. Pissed off, yes, but bitter, no. I am fortunate to enjoy what I do, am in good health, and have a wonderfull wife and family. I am pissed off that Gromack and crew have hijacked our democracy. Their continual actions to disenfranchise the electorate go against all that I believe in and what America is supposed to be.
Clarkstown life February 10, 2013 at 01:52 pm
I read the papers Mike. I saw you plead guilty to a misdemeanor and a felony and have to repay 59k to get the felony removed. Like I said, I am sure someone up here made you plead guilty. Your arrogance and lack of shame are what make me 'disgusted'.
Hilary Kunz February 10, 2013 at 03:27 pm
Brenda, I understand and fully relate to being upset by the political pandering and shady deals. But from the beginning, this thread has been about Mike blatantly saying that the hard work done by the municipal highway workers was undeserving of a simple word of acknowledgement. His original post was the sarcastic comment about "toll workers" and "realtors" - you know, people "just doing what they are paid for". It is that comment that I find disrespectful and uncalled for. Is the system broken?? Absolutely! But it's not going to be fixed by insulting or holding the highway employees or the individual police officers responsible for the problems. My point was, and remains, that there is no reason to go after or disrespect the employees who go to work & do their jobs - especially when the job was done well. These town employees are your neighbors, fellow taxpayers, your volunteers, and often your friends. There is nothing wrong with having them be told "thanks, good job, or we appreciate what you do" - a compliment, an acknowedgement, or simple respect costs the taxpayer NOTHING. I stongly believe Mike's communication skills that are the issue- not my comprehension. I got his initial point loud & clear.
Michael N. Hull February 10, 2013 at 04:18 pm
Brenda and Hilary:
Good points. Glad to see you are both actively concerned about "political pandering and shady deals". 'Odd Job' Now that Hirsch is gone from the public scene, though not apparently from the blogs, I am reminded of the expression: "When a lion dies he will be mocked by the rabbits". It is a pity you have nothing to say about the "odd job" that Sparaco has in Ballard's Highway dept. How do I spell patronage? Try S-P-A-R-A-C-O. http://newcity.patch.com/blog_posts/the-highway-departments-doo-wop-dance Then try S-A-V-I-N-O http://newcity.patch.com/blog_posts/clarkstown-and-africa-friends-and-phone-calls 'Odd Job': do you have an "odd job" in the town which might explain your moniker, 'Odd Job'? If you follow this by speaking up on the issues Hirsch is railing against (which I think are patronage, rising property taxes, political jobs controlled by people like Lettre and Sparaco, politicians who vote to continually increase the town's debt, and the political 'House of Horrors' meetings held to control those elected to office etc.) then you will have my ear. http://www.rocklandtimes.com/2012/08/09/house-of-horrors/ http://www.rocklandtimes.com/2012/08/30/house-of-horrors-story-spooks-town-board/ An old lion is not the problem. What say you, 'Odd Job', about Sparaco's 'odd job'? What say you about "political pandering and shady deals"?
Hilary Kunz February 10, 2013 at 05:00 pm
Thank you all for the engaging debate. Mr.Day you initial thoughts were appreciated by my family, and I'm sure by many others. However, it is a beautiful day, and I choose not to let Mike Hirsch or his ignorance take up any more of my time. Have a great day, everyone :) !
Jack Moolick February 10, 2013 at 05:15 pm
Washer, Did you take a poll of the Town when you decided to speak for the "majority of people"?
I am disappointed, but not surprised at the libelous personal attacks allowed by the OATCH Editors by some of these self righteous bloggers on other bloggers. I thought personal attacks are against the Terms if Service? Are the Editors asleep this quiet Sunday? Or are personal attacks OK when rendered against some but not others? Calling someone a FRAUD and a CRIMINAL is uncalled for and these comments should be deleted by the PATCH Editors if they have any sense of decency.

Michael Hirsch pleaded guilty to one count of filing a false instrument, His corporation, which was fined $59,000, pleaded guilty to two counts of offering a false instrument for filing — one a misdemeanor and one a felony. Offering a False Instrument for Filing falls under the broader crime of fraud. Sorry..not libelous, just factual.
Mike Hirsch February 10, 2013 at 06:04 pm
Thank you Michael. What was it that Ed Koch used to say? "If you agree with 7 out of 10 things that I say, I am pleased. If you agree with 10 out of 10 things that I say, you should see a psychiatrist." I know that over 70% of the people in our town agree with what I say. To those that don't, too bad. As far as my original post is concerned, let me say this - Different things are important to different people. The concept of heroism is important to me. Maybe I got a little carrued away with my friend Ed, so let me rephrase my original post: (1) Ed, let's not dilute the word hero, and (2) The town highway department did a good job with this storm. If Hilary would read my discourse with Ed and distill it down, that's basically what I said. To the anonymous posters who would like to try and discredit me - do your best. The great majority of the citizens in our town know what I stand for and am happy that I started this fight four years ago.
Mike Hirsch February 10, 2013 at 06:13 pm
Thanks fox. I just looked up the definition of hero - a man of great strength or courage, any man admired for his courage, nobility, or exploits. I know it is difficult to be a politician, but it rubs me the wrong way when they start calling everyone a hero. That was the point that I was trying to make with my friend Ed, who happens to be a man of great courage.
Mike Hirsch February 10, 2013 at 06:23 pm
Yes Hilary. I broke a law which I am opposed to, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, and am paying the fine. Once the fine is paid in full, the felony against the corporation gets expunged. As I have said before, in private enterprise if you file a false document you pay a fine. In our public sector, Ilan Schoenberg has filed false county budgets for a decade and is now looking for a promotion. Doesn't sound like equality before the law to me.
William Demarest (Editor) February 10, 2013 at 06:52 pm
Thanks to all the hard-working crews who were out there during the storm, and to the volunteers who were on many hours of standby during the storm in our fire departments and ambulance units. Want to help out? If you have a fire hydrant near your home shovel the snow away so it is clear - in case of an emergency.

Mr. Pointing says that an issues conference is unusual. The unusual step is called for because thisRead More project is highly unusual; it is unprecedented. This French-owned water company wants to implement its pet technology at our expense - it makes sense for the company because the project makes lots of money. There is information available that calls into question the "definitive" studies carried out by the water company. Of course they found that their technology was the best option - what a surprise! They have not made the case that they carried out a disinterested examination of the issues in the public interest. Yes there are still issues. Also, stop threatening us with increased costs from delay. First, it does not make sense and second, you are trying to bully us into accepting your proposal. That is one more sign that something is wrong in your proposal.

There were no open meetings. I attended the April meeting and Mr. Lettre was directed by the TownRead More Board to return with more precise estimates and to include options for other upgrades. I have attended every meeting of the Town Board since that time and Mr. Lettre never returned in an open meeting. Mr. Borelli indicated that Mr. Lettre had addressed his concerns directly and privately. According to the Open Meetings Law, the deliberations of the Town Board are to be open and visible to the public. Private individual meetings or communications with members of the Town Board so as to avoid open deliberations flouts the intent of the Open Meetings Law. Mr. Gromack's statement of other meetings is inaccurate and, since it was specifically in response to a question about open meetings, dishonest.
