Arts Council Of Rockland Hires New Executive Director

The Arts Council of Rockland’s board of directors announced the appointment of Janey Tannenbaum as the new executive director. Tannenbaum, who began July 1, takes over for Mark Judelson.

The board released a statement about her hiring and belief that arts help to build stronger communities.

“We are collectively elated about the energy, ideas, and new skills that Janey brings to the Arts Council.  Ms. Tannenbaum brings a twenty-year record of cultural activism in the arts and literature, specializing in broadening the range of communities reached by not-for-profit organizations and government agencies.”

Tannenbaum said her responsibilities include overseeing the nonprofit Arts Council’s re-grant programs in arts and education, and all other aspects of its programming.  

She has ideas for moving the organization forward.

“In the future we will expand our arts programming, initiate a centralized publicity mechanism for arts programming, and expand our outreach for training for grant applications,” said Tannenbaum on Thursday.

Board President Keith Cornell noted Tannenbaum’s more than two decades of experience includes being director of the Bowery Poetry Club/Bowery Arts & Sciences, a director at the Smithsonian Institution Press and consultant to arts organizations around the country. He anticipated new ideas for Rockland residents coming from the Arts Council in the next year.

The Garnerville-based Arts Council is dedicated to advancing the arts and the role of artists within the Rockland community. The Arts Council funds new and emerging work by poets, writers, performers, visual artists, filmmakers, and other artists, and advances arts education and cultural projects throughout the county.
