Hi-Tor To Hold First Race On Oct. 28

The fundraising three-mile race starts at 9 a.m.

The Hi-Tor Animal Care Center will host its first race on Sunday, Oct. 28th in an area its members hope the public will become quite familiar with soon.

The three-mile run/walk will take place right next to the shelter’s current location at 65 Fireman’s Memorial Drive in Pomona. It’s the area where members hope to build a new animal shelter to replace the current one. However, that land is parkland which the county says cannot be used for building.

The race on the 28th will raise money for the Rebuild Hi-Tor fund and for the veterinary bills of animals at Hi-Tor currently. The funds will be split 50-50 amongst the two causes.

“I’m a runner and I volunteer at the shelter, and a lot of runners who volunteer there end up walking the dogs around this area,” said Peggy Marzell, organizer of the race. “So we thought it would be great if we could hold a race here and raise money for the shelter.”

The race form can be downloaded at www.HiTor.org org or picked up at New Synergy Salon at 112 Maple Ave. in New City. Pre-registration costs $30 to enter the race and $35 to sign up on the day of the race.

“We hope to get about 200 runners,” Marzell said. “It’s a nice flat course. The runners will end up running behind the golf course and then back to the shelter area.”

Once back, there will be food donated from Rockland Bakery and ShopRite for the participants. There will also about 12 dogs there who will be up for adoption, as the race is also an adoption event.

“There will be all kinds of different dogs out there waiting to go home with someone,” Marzell said.

She added she hopes that the race will become a yearly event in the future.

Marzell said the race is also still looking for sponsors.
