Father’s Day could mean a restful day at home for a Dad. But, with so much available to do in the local area, why not hop in the car, get out, and enjoy.
▪ Make it a day of baseball
Starting at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday at Provident Bank Park, the Rockland Boulders invite kids and Dads onto the diamond to play catch in the outfield, or run bases or turn a “make believe” double play on the infield. Or, give the Orangeburg Batting Cages a try. At just $2.00 for 12 pitches (other options available as well)let’s see if Dad can give the ball a ride and, if so, how far.
▪ Sailing The Hudson
What can be better than a cruise up the Hudson?
Departing from the Haverstraw Marina, the Commander takes you, Dad and guests on a 2-hour cruise beginning at 1:30 p.m. which sails north past Stony Point Lighthouse, Verplanck, Tomkins Cove, Peekskill, and turns at the Bear Mountain Bridge for a return trip. Buy Dad his own journal, and have him describe his Hudson Journey the same way famed writer Washington Irving did.
Minimum number of reservations needed for this cruise is 20, and telephone reservations are required. Cost is $15 for children (5-12), $20 for seniors (62+), and $25 for adults.
▪ Walking and talking art, and dining in Nyack
If art is Dad’s favorite past time – especially Edward Hopper art – visit the village of Nyack for ArtWalk 2011 from 12 – 5 p.m. The 6th annual event is “A Tribute To Edward Hopper” and also celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Edward Hopper House Art Center. Produced by Nyack Merchants' Committee of Friends of the Nyacks, you and Dad can stroll the streets, meet the artists themselves displaying their work on various Nyack shops, and grab a bite to eat at one of the many diverse village eateries.
▪ Farmer’s Market – more than just food
It’s true. A visit to the Haverstraw Farmers Market is highlighted by Kids corner activities, live demonstrations and music, the market is held rain or shine from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. And if Dad truly wants to enjoy it, perhaps you and he can volunteer together. Volunteers are always appreciated.

▪ Help out at Cropsey Community Farm
Okay, deer are cute, but not when they’re eating the fruits of the labor. On Father’s Day, the team needs your assistance in finishing up installation of fence posts, and offers additional activities as well. It’s a different way to celebrate Father’s Day, but beneficial. Volunteer hours begin 8 a.m. – noon, and again from 2 p.m. -5 p.m. , or completion..

From noon – 4 p.m., visit the New City and learn how the military in the 1940s recruited aspiring artists - who eventually became known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops - from art schools along the east coast and trained them in the art of camouflage and deception to deceive the enemy.
