People to People Survives Sandy-Related Roof Fire

They are still in need of food donations and volunteers

Hurricane Sandy left many in Rockland with no power, with blocked roads and there were several fires from transformers. Unfortunately, People to People, Rockland County's largest food pantry suffered a fire the night of the storm.

The heating unit on the roof of the West Nyack building caught on fire Tuesday night. The heating unit is just for People to People and a fixed or new one cannot be put back until the roof is fixed.

Nanuet Fire Department responded and put out the fire. The duct work for the heating system sustained damaged and there are several missing ceiling tiles in the lobby.

Because the fire department had to put out the fire, there is some water damage to the lobby and a few back offices.

Right now People to People is putting a tarp over the vent holes in case of rain.  New City Ambulance responded to the fire as well although there were no injuries.

People to People is still able to function, although limited and they're running on a generator. They're seeking food donations and volunteers.

They are currently closed because of the fire and the conditions inside the building. The sign on the front door says they will reopen on Monday, Nov. 5
