You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

Clarkstown South Shopping Extravaganza

When/Where: Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Germonds Park, 185 Germonds Road in West Nyack.
Why Go: Clarkstown South Assets Leadership Team hosts its first Outdoor Shopping Extravaganza as a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. It feature 30 vendors selling clothing, jewelry, home goods and food products. South clubs and sports teams will also be selling items, fundraising and staffing an arts and crafts table for kids. Food choices include Chefs2be, American Burrito and Kangaroo Swirls plus nonstop entertainment provided by South Troubadours, the South Spirit Hip Hop team and local bands.

Why Go: It’s still chilly outside, so grab the kids and pick up fresh groceries indoors

Walk MS NYC-Southern NY

When/Where: Saturday, April 28 at 8 a.m./ 299 Rockland Lake Road, Valley Cottage
Why Go: Walk MS Rockland County is presented by Nyack Hospital at Rockland Lake State Park. Site opens at: 8 a.m., walk begins at: 9:30 a.m. and site closes at: 12 p.m. The route is three miles and is fully accessible.

When/Where: Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m./IMAX Theatre at Palisades Center, 4270 Palisades Center Drive, West Nyack
Why Go: IMAX Theatre at Palisades Center in West Nyack is the only theatre to have this film in the Rockland, Bergen, Westchester area; it depicts life in the Arctic for a family of polar bears. The film is narrated by Oscar Award Winner Meryl Streep with songs by Paul McCartney.

Pearl River Community Cleanup

When/Where: Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Meet at the Central Avenue Field Gazebo in Pearl River.
Why Go: Help keep Pearl River clean while meeting neighbors and putting in community service time with this event, which is part of the Great American Cleanup. The meet and greet for participants will be held at the gazebo in Central Avenue Field. Supplies will be available there. Choose a site or have one suggested for you. Rain date is Sunday, April 29.

Pearl River High School Musical Production of Damn Yankees

When/Where: Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28 at 7 p.m. in the Pearl River High School auditorium.
Why Go: See Pearl River High School students perform the modern retelling of the Faust legend. A middle-aged man sells his soul to become a baseball player capable of leading his Washington Senators to victory against the Yankees.
Cost/Contact: Tickets are $12 at the door.


Clarkstown Annual Track & Field Meet

When/Where: Sunday, April 29 (Rain date May 6) at 11:30 a.m. at Clarkstown South High School Track, 31 Demarest Mill Road in West Nyack
Why Go: Come out to the "Annual Track & Field Meet" for Clarkstown residents between the ages of 7 and 12 as of April 29, 2012.)  Registration starts on site at 11:30 a.m.  Events start at 12:15 p.m.  The events are 55 meter, 100 meter, 400 meter, 800-meter runs, and long jump.  Sneakers must be worn. Please bring lawn chairs.

Art Gallery

Why Go: The Art & Design Studio in Nanuet has an art gallery showcased in the upstairs Nanuet Community Room during the month of April. Stop by and appreciate some of the works from the studio’s students

It's entirely true that every professional has out-of-pocket expenses. But as someone who worked asRead More a corporate trainer, I can guarantee you I NEVER had to pay out of pocket expenses for supplies to teach classes. Every piece of paper, supply, and even snacks for the participants were fully covered expenses. If I had to spend out of pocket money to procure supplies, I could submit for a reimbursement, and receive it, no questions asked. I am now in school to become a high school teacher and I can see the stark difference in how the education of folks in a corporate environment is incredibly different, and privileged, than the public school environment. I've sat through numerous classes in the Clarkstown and Ramapo districts, doing observations required for my education certification, and while Clarkstown certainly benefits from certain advantages, the shabbiness of being a public school is still there. Furniture, such as teacher desks, that looks like it was purchased in a garage sale 30 years ago... faculty bathrooms that are dark and dingy, nearly crumbling, and sorely in need of updating. Etc. The public expects teachers to have professional training, act professionally, but they lack sometimes basic resources and are expected to function in an environment that feels more like a dungeon than an institution of learning. The citizens of Clarkstown, if they could get a tour of some of the facilities they are expecting children to learn in, and teachers to teach in, would be very surprised. We do supply some great technology, but then we put it in classrooms with windows that won't stay closed when it's windy, as one example. I spent most of my time in South, which is the best of the bunch, facilities-wise. Clarkstown North is a mess, Woodglen's woods are littered with fallen trees no one's cleaned up after Sandy, Laurel Plains had to be shuttered thanks to that whole foul stench... the district is in a situation where there are major capital improvements that are going to be needed. Buildings are aging, and it seems it's only the most basic of upkeep that happens. The district can't even fix the roofs of the buildings without applying for a state grant.

What professional doesn't spend $500 per year on out of pocket expenses related to their jobs?Read More Staples offering 10% (or 5 in some cases) is hardly an example of the community getting involved. Thankfully, there are other examples of the community and PTA's getting involved and providing needed services. Clarkstown and surrounding areas hardly have substantial unmet needs in their classroom, thankfully.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.

As Tom Nimick says, we need an outside auditor for that operation since taxpayers were abused with the hiring of a political operative Jay Savino who I understand is singing like a canary.
