Sinkhole Appears on Eileen Avenue

A sinkhole opened up yesterday afternoon in New City—right in front of 1 Eileen Ave.

Thank goodness there were neighbors home who saw it and sprang into action.

"It appeared around 3:30 p.m.," said Phyllis Ehrenman. "I waved down a school bus and I stood there in the sweltering heat with four others waving people away."

She also called 911 and Clarkstown Town Supervisor Alex Gromack's office. She tried to call the Highway Department, but at 4 p.m. they were already closed.

Police told her they had an emergency contact number.

Sure enough, by the time Ehrenman returned from the Woodglen Elementary School commencement, at 8:30 p.m., the sinkhole had been covered and cones were placed around it.

"Now I can rest easy," she said. "I will follow up to see how the highway department will repair it."

Ehrenman said there's a corroded pipe under the road that leads to a stream on her property.
