Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at RCC
The 23rd annual Rockland Community College Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off its events with Latin jazz band, "Nu Latin Unit," on the main campus in Ramapo.
The featured events at the college include music, films, art, lectures and the Hispanic Heritage Student Achievement Awards.
Hispanic Heritage Month officially begins in the U.S. on Sept. 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.

Nu Latin Unit (formerly Nu Guajiro) struck its first chords in Brooklyn, NY in 1995. They have toured the United States, Puerto Rico and Europe for private performances, festivals, radio and TV appearances. Nu Latin Unit blends a profound respect for tradition with a healthy dose of funky innovation and the grit of 10 years on New York City Streets.

Dr. Gerardo Piña-Rosales, Professor of Spanish, CUNY Lehman College and Graduate School and University Center, has been a member of the North American Academy on the Spanish Language since 1992 and its President since 2008. He has published numerous books including "Hablando bien se entiende la gente," which includes Spanish language tips. Vanessa Lago Barros, RCC Instructor, Foreign Languages, collaborated with him on the book.

Honored recipients receive a $200 scholarship.
Students of Hispanic heritage who have earned 24 credits with a grade point average of at least 3.0 are eligible to apply. A selection committee chooses a candidate in each of the following categories: Academic Achievement, Artistic Talent, Athletic Accomplishments, and Personal Accomplishments.
