Twilight Craze Consumes Rockland Teens

Girls come out in force to see opening of Twilight: Eclipse at Palisades Center. For guys, well many of them just don't get it.

Stan Morodokhin of New City just doesn't get it.

"This Twilight craze is just juvenile," said Morodokhin, a 20-year-old Rockland Community College student. "19 and 20 year old girls are dressed up in 'Team Edward' shirts; I can't understand it."

While guys like Morodokhin may not understand the "Twilight" scene, girls of all ages do and they were out in force at the AMC Loews Palisades Center 21 theater in West Nyack for the premiere of Twilight: Eclipse based off of Stephanie Meyer's popular fantasy series.

"Eclipse is my favorite movie of the series so far," commented Brianna Lalji, an 18-year-old Twilight fan from Pomona, "This movie has the most action, plus the actors are total cuties. It is an unconventional love story and girls adore them."

Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) battle for Bella Swan's (Kristen Stewart) love for the entire two hour movie while they put their differences aside to protect their town, Forks, from an army of uncontrollable new-born vampires.

Many of the girls have different reasons behind their purchase of the $11 movie ticket.

"I've been into vampires since I was little," commented Kathy Gaurdimino of Spring Valley. "So any movies with vampires, banshees, werewolves or witches are a must see for me."

"I am actually not a big fan of books myself," admitted Wendy Marcos of Spring Valley, "I have seen each of the movies so far just to get kicks out of the obsessive screaming girls every time Taylor Lautner has his shirt off. I can't imagine going absolutely crazy over fictional characters, but the movies themselves are a guilty pleasure of mine."

Some fans are not pleased with the reenactments and feel that the books are consistently better than the movies.

"Although the movie stayed true to the book, the acting was pretty awful," stated a disappointed fan, Susanna Perlov from Suffern.

"Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner had more sexual tension with each other than with Kristen Stewart," added 19-year-old Jennifer Grossman."

Pleased or not, Twilight: Eclipse is a hot topic among crowds outside of Rockland County movie theaters, and across the country as well. The film set a new record for a single day Wednesday opening gross of $68.5 million.

The female fascination with vegetarian vampires seems to be just another item added to the list of things that males will not ever understand.
