Nanuet Wrestling, Vision Sports Club Hosts Fire Truck Pull for Breast Cancer

Check out the results below. They raised $5,000 for breast cancer

Vision Sport's Club of Pearl River teamed up with the Nanuet Wrestling team in the name of Breast Cancer this past Sunday. The Second Annual Fire Truck Pull took place in the sports club’s parking lot. All money raised goes directly to the Avon Center for Breast Cancer Research.

The idea goes to Carmine Serra, Nanuet Wrestling Coach, whose wife Denise was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. Denise works in sales at Vision Sports Club and also works out with a member of the Pearl River Fire Department and a member of the Nanuet Fire Department.

“It was my husband’s idea,” said Denise Serra. “My husband works with the wrestling team at school. He had decided, ‘why don’t we do a fire truck pull?’ So he talked to the guys I work out with, the school and the owner of the gym. We just got it together.”

“The past few years, the wrestling team has done a few fundraisers for breast cancer,” said Carmine Serra. “It started when I took over as coach four years ago. This is something the whole team can get involved in. We figured a fire truck pull would be a good thing and it just kept on growing.”

Last year there were 16 teams and this year almost 30 teams came out. Businesses around town signed up as teams and any sports pulled including soccer, football, cheerleading, wrestling and volleyball.

“I recruited people in the gyms. Clarkstown (and) Orangetown Police departments had a team,” said Serra. “All the community really got in. It’s really great.

“(Denise) got breast cancer a few years ago so she’s been championing a lot of these fundraisers,” said Robert Logano, owner of Vision Sports Club. “She’s been with us (Vision Sports Club) since the beginning. She wanted to do a fire truck pull. We have a great long parking lot for this. A lot of firemen and police officers are members so she asked some of the guys if they would do a fire truck pull.”

Nanuet Wrestling has raised close to $10,000 over the last couple of years for Breast Cancer through various events.

“We go to all the fire and police departments in the community and then the people within the departments reach out to the people in their fire departments and police departments,” said Denise Serra. “All the people at the (registration) tables are from the Nanuet Wrestling team or Nanuet High School. They’re volunteering to help raise money for the breast cancer.”

“It’s a great time for a good cause,” said Logano. “She and Carmine put everything together. I’m looking forward to next year.”

Also, much of the food and shirts were donated for the day.

“We knew some teams here didn’t compete to win so we wanted to give them an opportunity to win something,” said Carmine. “A lot of the people in the community (participated). We’ve had some private companies like Subaru.”

This isn’t the first charity event for Logano and Vision Sports Club.

“We’ve done a number of these types of functions. At the beginning of the summer, one of the instructor’s daughter came down with a rare form of brain cancer and we raised money for her. We had a member appreciation day,” he said. “A gym is a community type business is you have to get involved. We like to make a good footprint here. We do what we can.”
