When Editor-in-Chief Brian Farnham resigned in April 2012, he said "I've never worked for a company that has been as scrutinized, criticized, and coal-raked as this one ... You’d think we were creating toxic waste, instead of, you know, free useful information.
The local Warner Center News/Las Virgenes Enterprise http://www.valleynewsgroup.com/final.pdf September 12th issue contained a “Special Election” section. They had invited all 11 candidates to submit comments for the upcoming California 45th Assembly Special Election. Six candidates responded and also prospered the advertising till of the paper! It was an unbiased, wonderful resource available online and in print of “free useful information” .
Now contrast the 9-15-13 submission by the Editor of the Encino Patch and then EVERY Patch in the 45th Assembly: Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Northridge/Chatsworth, Calabasas, and Woodland Hills. Five candidates were featured, eliminating three of the Democrats running , two of the Republicans, and the independent. There are in fact four candidates who have run previously for office on the ballot for the 45th Assembly: The three Republicans and Dennis Deyoung who ran when he was a Republican.
The most recent candidate was Chris Kolski who ran for the same office in November of 2012, garnering 40% of the vote in the Primary and 36% in November. Clearly the front runner – the one with a record of vote getting. Meanwhile one would think Susan Shelley the former Democrat ran for Congress in 2012, with an endorsement by the Daily News( netting a paltry 4th place with 4,000 votes) was the only ballot choice for Republicans. Not so.
How did the Encino Patch Editor justify the choice? Based on reprinting a Q&A by “The Community Connection” . Who is the “Community Connection” ? They have 38 advertisers, including Wayne Adelstein of the North Valley Community Connection and President of the North Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce located at 11326 Reseda Blvd, the same address for former attorney tunred marketing entrepreneur Bruce Safran. Nowhere on Community Connections website could we find the referenced article. Oddly enough the Community Connection is a struggling “Patch” in print.
So we wonder why would anyone print such a piece. Leaving out Democrats – endorsing a Republican. Vague criteria. Why would the Community Connection/Encino Patch do this? Oddly enough this is the very same thing which prompted Susan Shelley, the former Democrat, when she ran in 2012 for Congress, to file a complaint against the Jewish Journal . Shame on The Patch, owned by AOL. Shame on The Community Connection owned by a former attorney who should know better. Shame on the North Valley Community Connection for not taking the traditional role of a newspaper: Print the Truth the whole truth…unbiased.
