So the Library is Having an Election?

Sometimes I find myself simply shaking my head in amazement. I live in a County where every public board seems to be trying to draw attention to itself. I don't think they do this on purpose, but it seems to happen with alarming frequency. Perhaps the craziest of them all is the New City Library.

I have to agree with those who until recent times never gave much thought to the Library or its Board of Trustees. Library boards should not be a topic of discussion, EVER. Responsible adults should be quietly overseeing the affairs of the library, and hire staff to run the day to day operation. The public arguments, the disdain, the child-like behavior - there just can't be this much turmoil to the library, can there?

Today is Election Day, and frankly having read the bios, and the various people and groups stumping for candidates, I am no closer to understanding who are the right people to get this board back on track. There are some experienced business people, and some intimating one or more of them may have a personal agenda, although no one can articulate what that agenda may be. There are some who are teenagers or barely older, and while that may not seem the best way to go when you have a $5 million dollar budget to be handled, perhaps these are exceptional young people. We have several people who use the services of the library, so they must be good candidates to run the library, no?

Hey, as a friend said last night, I say the pledge of allegiance with great enthusiasm - I should run for President!

Well, whomever emerges from the vote today, I hope that the library goes back to being just that - a place to go when reading, research, or light entertainment is needed, and not a frequent topic of news or discussion about the board and its dysfunction.
