Statement by Senator Carlucci on Raising the Minimum Wage in New York State

Minimum Wage

“I applaud President Obama’s decision to fight for increasing the minimum wage.  At the same time, New York cannot sit back and wait for action.  New York must set an example for Washington to act by working together in a bipartisan fashion and raising workers’ pay here at home.

“Raising the minimum wage for our lowest paid workers will guarantee that thousands of our hardest working men and women have a fair shot at achieving the American dream. Just yesterday, I was proud to join with my Senate colleagues in releasing a detailed policy report that shows that women and minorities stand the most to gain with a modest increase in their wages.  The experts agree that real wages will skyrocket and our economy will create jobs across the board.  I am confident that we can put the politics aside and get this done for the folks that need our assistance the most."

Every time the minimum wage was raised.
Jobs suffered for 12-18 months. How many more jobs are our politicians ready to lose for "feel good" legislation?

Please, no more of this nonsense. Raising the minimum wage does not result in job loss. Giving more income to low wage earners is a stimulus. http://www.raisetheminimumwage.com/pages/job-loss

Nice propaganda.

No reason the minimum wage shouldn't be $25/hour; why not $50/hour? Stimulus? That's the same as Nancy Pelosi stating that unemployment benefits are a stimulus to the economy.
Taking money from working people and giving it to non-working people does not a stimulus create. Neither does indiscriminately raising wages for the sake of "feel good politics." The State of NY has more non-working people on public benefits than working people. NY is considered a "Death Spiral State." http://foxnewsinsider.com/2012/11/28/are-you-living-in-a-death-spiral-state-and-if-so-what-should-you-do-about-it/

Another case of treating the symptom instead of the disease. Real wages have been depressed for years and one of the biggest reasons is the "insourcing" of cheap labor- illegal immigrants. If businesses didn't have that large block of cheap labor to turn to they'd have to raise wages, which would attract tax paying citizens. You say that would raise prices? Small price to pay to restore balance and it raises real wages through supply and demand, not artificially though minimum wage laws.

when is the last [first] time carlucci met a payroll, let alone one that just got increased 20%. his salary pension and benefits are guaranteed. his staff is not paid by him but by us.
ask Carlucci where he would come up with the extra loot if he actually had a business. then ask him how an extra few dollars is going to help with the "American dream" of what,,,home ownership.. what is the American dream he is talking about. I am not against it but how much it will help is another story. that is why Carlucci needs to elaborate on how it will help, and be specific. i don't think you can rent a room, never mind an apartment, and have a car +gas+insurance on min wage. even figuring their real income, food stamps etc, which would not be in the form of cash does not put clothes on you back and gas in the car. along with a increase in min wage it might be helpful to allow a 1 time allotment of $1,000 for a car with state backed insurance and a gas card for 1 tank every 2 weeks for basic necessities like work, food shopping and other such absolute necessities. donate a car to some place [ maybe dealers like on 304 by west nyack road ] where poor can buy them cheap and get double the deduction for person donating. imo transportation is a big issue.if not the biggest free bus passes would help but still-when is the last time carlucci had to take a bus anywhere with his wife and 2 or 3 kids in tow-people need a car imo

Union wages are based on the minimum wage. Raise the minimum wage, raise union wages, lose jobs. This is crony patronage to the unions. Nothing more.

I'm not sure when the last time that someone achieved the American Dream by making $9.00 per hour.

There is a lot of evidence, compiled by people who want to raise the minimum wage, that such an increase does not cost jobs. But, these researchers have a vested interest in reaching such a conclusion. Any chance of cherry picking the data?
We should have a sub minimum wage, for people under 21, for three months, to establish that they can discharge employment responsibilities, and then the wage should be increased to the adult minimum wage. Each state should determine the minimum wage, as the cost of living varies greatly.

Interesting analysis. Not done by a labor union activist, or a business owner. At a minimum, we need to realize that there are different ways to analyze data, and that the data can be subject to a variety of interpretations. Calling different conclusions "nonsense" is the "my way or the highway" mentality that has really hurt the dialog process..

Issy. Obama's Stimulus= Our Hard-Earned Money Going To Democrat's Union Bosses and all of Democrat Pet Projects ( i.e. phony Green Companies ), resulting in Money Laundering because a good portion of this " Stimulus " comes back to the Democrat campaign fund...
Stimulus, here, is a raised minimum wage, resulting in fewer jobs to those entering the work force. Entering the work force...not a life job at minimum wage...not supporting a family at minimum wage. ... Entry level positions. Look at the percentage of teens who cannot find work. That would increase with a higher Minimum wage.....Employers will have to offer fewer positions They have a budget,...Unlike the Democrats... ...Higher minimum wage causes job loss...which is what Progressives want...more people go on Welfare, Food Stamps...unjustly, unethically go on Disability. And, therefore, more Democrat Voters because they will continue to vote for their Free Stuff!

Aerial of United Water's proposed water treatment plant
Tom Nimick June 11, 2013 at 09:23 pm
Mr. Pointing says that an issues conference is unusual. The unusual step is called for because thisRead More project is highly unusual; it is unprecedented. This French-owned water company wants to implement its pet technology at our expense - it makes sense for the company because the project makes lots of money. There is information available that calls into question the "definitive" studies carried out by the water company. Of course they found that their technology was the best option - what a surprise! They have not made the case that they carried out a disinterested examination of the issues in the public interest. Yes there are still issues. Also, stop threatening us with increased costs from delay. First, it does not make sense and second, you are trying to bully us into accepting your proposal. That is one more sign that something is wrong in your proposal.
John Taggart June 13, 2013 at 08:08 am
An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

There were no open meetings. I attended the April meeting and Mr. Lettre was directed by the TownRead More Board to return with more precise estimates and to include options for other upgrades. I have attended every meeting of the Town Board since that time and Mr. Lettre never returned in an open meeting. Mr. Borelli indicated that Mr. Lettre had addressed his concerns directly and privately. According to the Open Meetings Law, the deliberations of the Town Board are to be open and visible to the public. Private individual meetings or communications with members of the Town Board so as to avoid open deliberations flouts the intent of the Open Meetings Law. Mr. Gromack's statement of other meetings is inaccurate and, since it was specifically in response to a question about open meetings, dishonest. Mr. Borelli, shame on you for accepting a private communication and not standing by your guidance to Mr. Lettre that he was to come back to an open meeting of the Town Board.

Grace Anthony Zemsky June 10, 2013 at 09:00 am
The traffic from the nearby Palisades Parkway is more of a noise nuisance than the cicada chorus.Read More (We have triple-paned windows because of it.) There is something almost musical about the hum of the cicadas. Of course, it may bother me more if I lived in the "affected area" and heard it constantly. Upon entering this nearby neighborhood, the sound crescendos. And yet, it can't be heard a couple of streets away. The drone of locusts is more bothersome than these 17 year cicadas.
