Statement on Rockland County's Second Quarter Decline in Sales Tax Revenue

Rockland County, Sales Tax Revenue Decline

Today’s second quarter report once again confirms that Rockland County cannot rely upon a sales tax increase to fix its long-term budgetary problems.  The data shows that the county has actually slipped .81% in sales tax revenue compared to one year ago today.  This is why I staunchly opposed raising the sales tax from the start because short-term gimmicks just won't add up.  I look forward to working with my partners in county government to find reasonable alternatives other than raising taxes.

What programs have you written or endorsed to help the financial situation of the county. Opposition to raising taxes is noteworthy - you fail to mention which services are to be downsized or eliminated if taxes do not cover the expenses.

Don't rely on estimates nobody can estimate, cut to the bone and above all stay away from my internet until I can buy the same thing at the same price and have it shipped for free. Forcing me to pay 3x more for the same thing + tax is a double tax that may reach 100-400%. Federal or state--stay away.
.With the exception of a few programs govt screws up most things it touches.

Hey David try not passing the buck by stating what obviously everyone wants hear. Why not start addressing the biggest drain on the taxpayers money, which also happens to be the largest area of Fraud...Medicaid!!

Don't forget.....When we all go down to NJ to shop, we all must legally tell the gov't on our tax return and pay tax on the money we saved....Cough Cough....Yea....I'm sure we do it all the time.......

I like that Mr. Carlucci just flat out says what he thinks, even has a statistic. I think he's doing a good job.
Rob, save yourself the paper work and shop in Rockland, when your done shopping stop in a resturant by the river have dinner, then take the worms you bought shopping and find a place to throw a line in for a while.

Amazon has plans to implement same day delivery and that's a game changer. Traditional, box stores will be hard pressed to compete with the cost and convenience of same day delivery. What will the already cash strapped counties (with large budget deficits) do when jobs and taxes from goods are significantly diminished do to the ingenuous innovations of the internet? Conventional wisdom states you cannot borrow your way out of debt. Where will Rockland and other county governments go to to supplement lost revenue in order to feed the monster they've created?

see now that is the kind of thing they should be planning for but they will wait till it is another crisis and do what they do best-raise taxes
They are really in trouble though. why would I go to the mall or even new city if I can but it on the internet for 1/2 price +1/2 tax get free shipping and even next day or 2nd delivery.. no gas not time spent is more $$ for me and less for the gas stations around here. believe me when I tell you you get very used to not getting it on the spot and taking it home immediately. even a week is not bad if you don't need it in a hurry. you can count the money you saved while you are waiting.

Dave, if you keep giving our money to the Hasids we will have nothing left.

Aerial of United Water's proposed water treatment plant
Tom Nimick June 11, 2013 at 09:23 pm
Mr. Pointing says that an issues conference is unusual. The unusual step is called for because thisRead More project is highly unusual; it is unprecedented. This French-owned water company wants to implement its pet technology at our expense - it makes sense for the company because the project makes lots of money. There is information available that calls into question the "definitive" studies carried out by the water company. Of course they found that their technology was the best option - what a surprise! They have not made the case that they carried out a disinterested examination of the issues in the public interest. Yes there are still issues. Also, stop threatening us with increased costs from delay. First, it does not make sense and second, you are trying to bully us into accepting your proposal. That is one more sign that something is wrong in your proposal.
John Taggart June 13, 2013 at 08:08 am
An issues conference will be a wast of time and money. So many ' issues ' have been pulled out ofRead More thin air. The people who organized against the plant will just keep saying the same thing. No amount of info will be enough, no answer will be accepted. The issues conference will be a circus of endless questions, ideas, and demands. Haverstraw bay reclassified as drinking water will better protect it, provide an endless supply of water and finally help end the stereotype of the Hudson being polluted Recommend

There were no open meetings. I attended the April meeting and Mr. Lettre was directed by the TownRead More Board to return with more precise estimates and to include options for other upgrades. I have attended every meeting of the Town Board since that time and Mr. Lettre never returned in an open meeting. Mr. Borelli indicated that Mr. Lettre had addressed his concerns directly and privately. According to the Open Meetings Law, the deliberations of the Town Board are to be open and visible to the public. Private individual meetings or communications with members of the Town Board so as to avoid open deliberations flouts the intent of the Open Meetings Law. Mr. Gromack's statement of other meetings is inaccurate and, since it was specifically in response to a question about open meetings, dishonest. Mr. Borelli, shame on you for accepting a private communication and not standing by your guidance to Mr. Lettre that he was to come back to an open meeting of the Town Board.

Thanks for sharing, Grace! Your thoughts on their noise?
Grace Anthony Zemsky June 10, 2013 at 09:00 am
The traffic from the nearby Palisades Parkway is more of a noise nuisance than the cicada chorus.Read More (We have triple-paned windows because of it.) There is something almost musical about the hum of the cicadas. Of course, it may bother me more if I lived in the "affected area" and heard it constantly. Upon entering this nearby neighborhood, the sound crescendos. And yet, it can't be heard a couple of streets away. The drone of locusts is more bothersome than these 17 year cicadas.
