No Time Like the Present

It's about time.

After too many years, but not too late to make a difference, 20-year Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef has finally joined the loud and vocal chorus of taxpayers who believe Rockland needs control in the destiny of our natural resources.

In response to the Public Service Commission's announced review of United Water's proposed Hudson River Water Desalination project in Haverstraw, Scott Vanderhoef has asked the Commission to give Rockland County special status to participate in its review.

Why do we need 'special status'?

We need special status because Rockland County and its residents really don't have much control over its own natural resources. Only a county water district would give Rockland the standing it needs to control our own water.

I proposed a county water district way back in February. My opponents decried the proposal, saying it wouldn't make any difference. I disagree – I believe that anything that gives our voice greater volume, greater weight, when debating the destiny of our own natural resources should be welcomed. Now, when we're facing a significant rate increase, now more than ever, we need greater standing and greater control.

While Scott Vanderhoef's proposal is welcome news, Rockland shouldn't have to ask for 'special status' when it comes to our own water. We should already have a seat, at the head of the table – after all, it is our water.
