I don't think people without fireplaces realize how easy something like this can happen. People can make a fire at 5PM one night, and wake up the next morning thinking the fire is long out when all they see is ash. However small, hot embers can still be concealed under the ash. I've cleaned ashes 24 hours after a fire and been quite surprised to see how long embers can keep burning under a coating of extinguished ashes. This fire is a horrible accident to see take place.
