JCC Lecture Series


Linda Birnbaum, PhD, Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Toxicology Program to speak at JCC Rockland.  

Linda Birnbaum, PhD, Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and National Toxicology Program, located in Washington, DC, will speak at JCC Rockland on Thursday, April 24, 2014.  

Dr. Birnbaum’s presentation will focus on the work of the NIEHS, the premier environmental health research institution in the world.  NIEHS is dedicated to discovering how the environment affects people, providing global leadership for innovative research that improves public health by preventing disease and disability.  NIEHS supports research on the role of environmental exposures in the initiation or promotion of diseases, including diabetes, obesity, breast cancer, asthma, Parkinson’s diesease and respiratory diseases. 

Dr. Birnbaum has received numerous awards and recognitions.  In October 2010 she was elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health.  She is a former President of the Society of Toxicology and has over 700 publications in peer reviewed journals. 

New York Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey, ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee will be introducing Dr. Birnbaum.

The program begins at 12:30pm and is free and open to the public.  The lecture is sponsored by JCC Rockland, AARP and Rockland County Office for the Aging.
