A TOR bus, Route 92, burned to the ground in Pearl River on Saturday about 10AM.  All passengers are safe.

UPDATED DETAILS

The fire apparently started at the right rear wheel area of the bus. That could be an indication that the right rear brake shoes may have been rubbing against the brake drum with to much pressure when the brakes were not applied.  That could be have been caused by the brakes not being properly adjusted or a mechanical failure of the mechanism that operates the brake shoes. If the right rear brake was dragging it could generate a tremendous amount of heat and ignite any oil that might be in the area, the bus  has a floor made of plywood, so that could ignite also. NYSDOT will hopefully have a determination of the cuase soon.

The bus became fully engulfed in flames starting at the rear of the bus. The explosion heard in the video was a tire exploding. The bus was towed to a site in Orangetown, and is usually impounded. The bus will be inspected  to find the exact cause of the blaze.  NYSDOT inspectors will do a thorough inspection of recent maintenance records and driver's pre-trip inspection logs. The driver allegedly reported a problem before leaving the Brega Transport facility, an interview with the driver by NYSDOT will confirm that.

Luckily it was not one of the new Hybrid buses. If the hybrid battery, located in that big hump on the roof, caught fire it would have been much worse.  So, an older bus totaled but nobody hurt, not  to bad.... not one of Brega Transports better days
