Blood Drive In Memory Of Jeremy Friehling

Blood donations always slow during the summer months when people are vacation and out of their normal routines and last week’s prolonged heat wave may have slowed the pace of donations even more. To help meet the daily need for more than 2,000 donations in the New York/New Jersey area, the New York Blood Center has scheduled a blood drive and free bone marrow registry for Tuesday at Clarkstown North High School in memory of Jeremy Friehling of New City, who died last year.

The drive from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. will take place in the school’s library. The drive has a goal of 75 units of blood. The New York Blood Center’s bone marrow registration group is underwriting the cost of registration with “Be The Match Registry” for people signing up at the drive.

The free registry is being offered Tuesday to give young people an opportunity to sign up. Since individuals cannot register until they are 18 years old, high school bone marrow registration drives often do not reach many students who would register.

People between the ages of 18 and 44 will be able to register Tuesday. That is the age group are most urgently needed because it is the range requested by transplant doctors more than 90 percent of the time. Research shows that these donors provide the greatest chance for transplant success.

Registration involves completing a health history form and giving a swab of cheek cells. Once registered, people remain on the registry until their 61st birthday.
