Children's Hospital Fundraising Walk, Family Fun Day Set For Sunday

The Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at at Westchester Medical Center will hold its biggest fundraiser of the year this weekend

On Sunday, the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at at Westchester Medical Center will hold its eighth annual Go The Distance walk and family fun day.

The event is the largest fundraiser for the children’s hospital each year. It takes place at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, with the walk starting at 9:30 a.m. Registration starts at 8 a.m., and people don’t have to sign up before Sunday morning to join in the walk or just make a donation.

“Early first year or two it was very patient- and patient family-oriented because the hospital wasn’t as well known at the time. People who knew about it were involved with the hospital in some way,” said Margie Ostrower, director of special events for Maria Fareri’s Children's Hospital Foundation. “The net has been thrown so much wider in recent years and we get people from all over the community and local organizations taking part in the walk. Still, more than half who walk are extension of patient families.”

Ostrower said traditionally the walk brings in about 4,000 people, and since the walk is less than a mile and non-competitive, she said a lot of younger children can participate in it, or parents can carry their kids for the entire thing. She said the walk can bring in about $250,000 for the hospital, although on a really good year that could be up around $300,000.

The money , for equipment or just other ways to improve the care Maria Fareri provides to kids from all over the Hudson Valley, as well as outside of the region and state.

This year the family fun day will include an assortment of bounce-y obstacle attractions such as a jousting area, face painting and tattoos, a fire truck, a display of 20 Storm Troopers, local dance groups performing and the Iona College women’s volleyball team is going to put on a demonstration.

Mike & Kacey, hosts of the morning show on WHUD are going to be the event’s master of ceremonies.

“They going to really keep the crowd energized and informed about all the stuff going on,” Ostrower said.

While some weather forecasts are calling for rain, Ostrower said the event will go on as scheduled no matter what the weather.

“We’ve had cold, we’ve had windy, we’ve had a lot of miserable weather. We’ve never had a biblical rain storm, though, and some places are predicating that,” Ostrower said. “We’re going forward, we’re going to be here no matter what. Hopefully we get a break in the weather and people come out.”

The Grand Marshal of the parade is Brooklyn Benedikt, 6, of Crestwood, who had open heart surgery at the hospital back in 2010. Benedikt is doing well now and counting down the days until the walk, which she’s taken part in with her family for the last six years.

“Brooklyn exemplifies the children that are cared for here at the hospital,” said Andy LaGuardia, director of communications for the hospital. “We felt she and her family would be tremendous advocates here for the hospital and that’s what they’ve been.”

LaGuardia added that the event is great for the whole family and has attractions so everyone can enjoy it.

“It’s a great way to spend a Sunday,” he said.

Patch is a sponsor of the event and will have the Patch table out on Sunday for those that want to stop by and visit.

The bid process should NOT have been pressure laden. It was a straight forward bid. But one of theRead More bidders did not like the specifications. Even after the County Executive kept watering it down it still was not enough. The bidder took the county to court in Putnam County of all places and that judge agreed with the bidder. The County then went to a higher court and they threw out that decision, but he may still get the contract, makes no sense right? This has gone on for almost 3 years and has paralyzed the Transportation Department. Almost everything they wanted to do to improve the system was put on hold. Mr Schule was basicly handcuffed and could not perform his job like he wanted. He is a good man, this should not have happened. Shame on a County Legislature that could be so easily manipulated, I guess that is why the state comptroller will be taking over the county's finances.

Could you elaborate on the pressures that the County Transportation office is under from TOR and TZRead More Xpress? It seems like one the Transportation Manager's manager's main function would be negotiating with these entities. He left because he couldn't handle it? That seems like an expected part of the job. How often are these bids renewed? Why is a bidding process pressure-laden?

What professional doesn't spend $500 per year on out of pocket expenses related to their jobs?Read More Staples offering 10% (or 5 in some cases) is hardly an example of the community getting involved. Thankfully, there are other examples of the community and PTA's getting involved and providing needed services. Clarkstown and surrounding areas hardly have substantial unmet needs in their classroom, thankfully.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.

George, don't you have enough to do straightening out the affairs of Clarkstown. Overtime in theRead More Police Department is rampant and the Town Attorney is out of control. As Tom Nimick says, we need an outside auditor for that operation since taxpayers were abused with the hiring of a political operative Jay Savino who I understand is singing like a canary. Get on the right side George before the FBI comes a lookin" I hear that the Gromack war chest is the first place they are looking for clues. Do the right thing George or you will get trampled with the rest of them.

Congratulations, George. Now about your other responsibilities as a member of the Town Board withRead More primary oversight over budget and expenditures: Won't you be the one to propose the needed audit of the Office of Town Attorney? You know the problems exist - likely you know more about the problems than I do. It is sad to see you silent in the face of the abuse of patronage. When will we hear your voice on it?

The new format is attractive but it is hard to find the comments that go with stories.
