A Tribute to Our Father on Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day for those who have sacrificed their lives or gave a part of their lives to warfare but survived to defend this country. It is important on that day to make sure that the American people remember these brave men and women. This past Memorial Day was a very special one in our family. Our father, Peter Moro, was honored by the Congers Veterans  Memorial Association this past Saturday along with other veterans for their service.
In 1968 Peter volunteered with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and began his combat tour in Vietnam where he served for a year. He then reenlisted in the Army upon his return and was in the service for a total of 5 ½ years. As a result of his service, Peter has received various medals as a United States soldier. While in Vietnam, he was wounded in the line of duty but he never received the Purple Heart because the proper medical documentation was missing. We are actively trying to help him get the medal he deserves.
After serving his country, he came home and raised three children, Chris, Aileen and Kevin, with his wife, Nancy. He became a member of the New York City Police Department and retired as a Second Grade Detective. Even though he was retired from the NYPD, he didn’t give a second thought to volunteer to help at Ground Zero and still volunteers his services with the NYPD Retiree Mobilization Unit. In between, he beat kidney cancer and is now cancer free.
From our father, we developed a love of our country, a strong work ethic and how to be good citizens in society. He is our hero and always will be, and we honor and salute him and all veterans. Thank you, Dad, and all the men and women who have served, who are serving, and who will serve this wonderful country. If you see a soldier or a veteran, take the time to shake their hand and thank them for their service.
