Josephine Nussbaum, Longtime New City Resident

Josephine Nussbaum, 100, a 73 year resident of New City, passed away peacefully on June 7 at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Josephine was born in Manhattan on May 13, 1914 to Joseph and Freda Jameson. She grew up in East Millinocket, Maine, and later New Rochelle, NY, where she met and married John Nussbaum, then moving to New City in 1941.

John (Jack) predeceased her in 1992. Josephine, the oldest of seven children, was predeceased by her brother James, and sisters Frances, Bette, Gloria and Jane. She is survived by her brother Joseph, son John, daughters Bette Nussbaum and Lenore Benefield, nieces, nephews, and numerous devoted friends whose lives she touched.

A longtime member of the Clarkstown Senior Citizen I Club and Explorers Club, she followed her dream and traveled extensively to Greece, Italy, Alaska three times, Ireland, the Panama Canal, to name a few. Her longtime skilled pastime was knitting and crocheting, donating most of her creations to charities or as gifts to friends.

A Mass to celebrate her life will be held at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in New City at 11:30am on Wednesday, June 11. Burial will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, to continue Josephine's spirit of giving, she would want you to donate to Catholic Charities Haverstraw, United Hospice of Rockland, Doctors Without Borders , the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice .

Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home Inc. handled arrangements.
