2 Arrests in Parking-Lot Purse-Snatchings in Nanuet, West Nyack

The Clarkstown Police Department has arrested two suspects wanted for
five purse snatches that occurred in store parking lots over the past week.

They were caught April 13 when a state trooper saw a car northbound on Route 303 that had been reported as being operated without the owner's permission.

A brief pursuit ensued involving both state and Clarkstown police.

The vehicle eventually stopped voluntarily in Congers at the intersection of Route 9W and Route 304, police said.

The people in the car were identified as Spiro Mandarakas, 29, of Washingtonville, NY and Shelly Schadt, 37, who is without fixed address.

The suspects matched the descriptions of two people wanted for questioning about several purse snatches committed in the Town of Clarkstown, police said.

They were taken by state police first to the Tarrytown barracks for processing, and were later transported to Clarkstown Police for further processing.

They were found to be in possession of two stolen credit cards that were proceeds from a larceny at the Costco in Nanuet, police said.

The Clarkstown Detective Bureau investigated and linked the suspects to three similar larcenies in the Nanuet Costco parking lot from April 10-13; a larceny in the Nanuet Stop & Shop parking lot on April 9; and an incident earlier in the day at the Shoprite in West Nyack.

Both suspects were charged with numerous counts of Grand Larceny and felony possession of stolen property for five different incidents. They were arraigned in Clarkstown Justice Court and sent to the county jail on $100,000 bail. They are due back in court April 16.
