The Rockland County Hazardous Material Team went on its first call of the year Friday morning to deal with fuel spilling out of a tank.
The Haverstraw Fire Department was called to Route 9W in Haverstraw at around 6:30 a.m. Friday morning. Shortly after arriving, the incident commander, Assistant Chief Robert Drexler Jr., called for the county’s Hazardous Material Team.
The firefighters contained the spilled fuel to the street, keeping it out of storm drains and the road shoulder. The Hazardous Material Team removed the remaining fuel from the damaged tank.
Also assisting on the scene were the Haverstraw Police Department, Haverstraw Highway Department and the New York State Department of Transportation. Peter Byrne, coordinator of fire services, safety and compliance, estimated the Hazardous Material Team is used on roughly 15 calls a year.
