Effort To Reduce Speeding Leads To 201 Tickets In May

The ongoing townwide traffic crackdown in Clarkstown is targeting six roads in New City and West Nyack in June, according to town officials.

In May, Operation Slow Down resulted in 165 tickets being issued for speeding violations. The project, which began in February, is designed to cut down speeding and aggressive driving on key roads throughout Clarkstown.

The June enforcement effort is targeting:

-       Strawtown Road in New City

-        McCarthy Way in West Nyack

-         Burda Avenue in New City

-         Congers Road in New City

-         Woodland Road in New City

-         Foxwood Road in West Nyack.  

“Our traffic officers identified specific roads in the Town of Clarkstown, based on volume and speed, that require added attention to ensure our resident’s safety,” said Clarkstown Supervisor Alex Gromack. “The purpose of Operation Slow Down is to educate our residents and raise awareness about the dangers of speeding through our neighborhoods. This is just another way our police department is keeping our Town safe.”

In may, the traffic enforcement effort led to a total of 201 violations for speeding and other violations:

- Germonds Road in West Nyack - 42

- Phillips Hill Road in New City – 7

- Old Mill Road in West Nyack/Valley Cottage - 48

- Highview Avenue in Nanuet - 13

- Little Tor Road in New City - 91

“So far Operation Slow Down is proving to be successful,” said Clarkstown Police Chief Michael Sullivan. “The program focuses on public safety, education about speeding and enforcement. We hope residents and visitors continue to become more aware of the dangers of speeding through our neighborhoods.”  

There are about 25 roadways designated as the most notorious for speeders in Clarkstown. Each month the Clarkstown Police Department selects various roads for the special enforcement effort, which is funded through a $15,000 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Commission.

Operation Slow Down is conducted in addition to normal traffic patrols throughout the town.
