Gas Odor Causes Building Evacuation

An odor of gas led to a brief evacuation of 2 New Hempstead Road in New City late this morning. O&R spokesman Mike Donovan said the New City Fire Department evacuated about 10 people from the building after several people reported smelling gas.

Donovan said the evacuation took place at 11:26 a.m. and people were allowed to return to the building at 11:57 a.m. He said the source of the odor was traced to a gas meter located outside the building in an underground vault that has grates at street level. Readings taken inside the building did not show any gas and Donovan said the outdoor levels barely registered.

O&R crews are repairing the meter. Donovan said the work should be completed today.
