UPDATE: New City Accident Traps Driver in Car

New City volunteer firefighters cut away parts of car to free West Nyack driver, who was later charged with driving while intoxicated.

A driver was trapped in a early this morning after a crash on Brewery Road in New City, according to New City volunteer firefighters.

Fire Chief Kenny Flynn said the driver was pinned by the dashboard after the car slammed into a guard rail shortly after midnight this morning. Flynn said the dash board shifted because of the crash.

New City firefighters cut away the dashboard and used hydraulic tools to roll the dashboard off the drivers legs. He was then removed from the car by firefighters, paramedics and emergency medical technicians.

The rescue effort took about 15 minutes.

Rockland Paramedics, New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps members and Clarkstown Police were part of the rescue operation.

Clarkstown Police reported the driver Anthony Passarella, 32, from West Nyack, was arrested on a DWI charge. Sgt. Jo Anne Fratianni said Passarella was driving a 2001 Honda east on Laurel Road in New City when he failed to stop at the intersection with Brewery Road and hit a guardrail headon.  After being removed from his vehicle, Passarella was taken to Nyack Hospital and treated for injuries which did not appear to be life threatening.  

Fratianni said Passarella was arrested, took a DWI test and results are pending. He is due in Clarkstown Justice Court on May 20 on the DWI charge, a misdemeanor.
