New City Man Convicted On Seven Counts In Domestic Abuse Case

Vikas Jagota found guilty of abusing his wife and child could face up to seven years in state prison when sentenced in March.

Vikas Jagota of 28 Butternut Drive in New City was found guilty of abusing his wife and convicted by a jury on felony counts of abortion and assault and five misdemeanor charges. The 37-year-old Jagota faces a maximum of seven years in state prison when he is sentenced on March 18, 2014.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe announced today that Jagota was convicted on one count each of Assault in the Second Degree, a class “D” Felony and Abortion in the Second Degree, a class “E” Felony. He was also convicted on one count of Endangering the Welfare of Child, a class “A” Misdemeanor, one count of Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, a class “A” Misdemeanor and three counts of Assault in the Third Degree, class “A” Misdemeanors.

“The victim in this tragic case is to be commended for coming forward and confronting her abuser at trial,” said Zugibe. “She testified with courage and strength on the witness stand. While the physical and emotional scars may be with her for the rest of her life, today's conviction will hopefully provide her with a small measure of help in overcoming the trauma she endured during several horrific years. The consequences of the defendant's actions will have a long-lasting and profound impact on both the victim and her young child.”

According to Zugibe, the defendant assaulted his wife numerous times during 2012. “On September 22, 2012, Jagota punched his pregnant wife in the abdomen, causing her to miscarry the following day,” said Zugibe.

On May 22, Jagota assaulted his wife when he became enraged after his brother was sentenced in an unrelated case on charges of involving forced labor and physical abuse. (See articles below.) Jagota repeatedly slapped his wife in the face and forced her wrist through a glass cabinet. He prevented her from calling police by slamming his fist onto her head, causing her to drop the telephone and collapse while he continued to kick her while lay on the floor. He also attacked their young child, slapping the child’s face.

Later that year, on December 31 Jagota assaulted his wife again. She tried to call 911, but was stopped by her mother-in-law. The victim later told an acquaintance about the repeated abuse and that person notified Ramapo Police.

Assistant District Attorney Amanda Doty prosecuted the case.
