The New Year has brought new leadership at the Congers Fire Department.
Michael Shields has been sworn in as the all-volunteer department’s new chief, succeeding Frank Heinemann, who served as chief in 2010 and 2011. As Shields took office, Clarkstown town Supervisor Alex Gromack, D-Congers, presented awards to Heinemann and to Scot Orser, who served as president of the Congers Fire Department in 2010 and 2011.
Heinemann now succeeds Orser of president of the Congers Fire District, the financial side of the fire department.
An installation ceremony at the Congers firehouse recognized the new leaders of the firefighting operations, as well as the new leaders of the fire district. In addition to Gromack, the ceremony featured Rockland County’s new sheriff, Louis Falco, D-Orangetown, who spoke of the important role volunteer firefighters play in protecting Rockland County.
The installation was also attended by Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services Director Gordon Wren Jr. and Clarkstown police Capt. Robert Mahon. The Rockland County Firefighters Pipes & Drums performed at the start of the installation.
